Massive WNBA Trade Sends Jewell Loyd to Las Vegas Aces and Kelsey Plum to LA Sparks
With February just days away, can you believe we are about to be just three months shy of the next WNBA season? Wild. But anyway, teams are making moves left and right to strengthen their rosters before opening day. Like the Massive WNBA trade that sends Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces and Kelsey Plum to the LA Sparks.
ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to break the news. He reveals,
“Blockbuster WNBA deal: The Seattle Storm are trading six-time All-Star Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces in a multi-team move that sends three-time All-Star Kelsey Plum to the Los Angeles Sparks, sources tell me.
The Storm are acquiring the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft and Li Yueru from the Sparks in this three-team trade, with the Sparks getting No. 9 from Seattle and the Aces receiving No. 13 from LA.”
Quite the shake up, a real disturbance being felt in the force. But honestly this insane deal works out nicely for everyone. Storm will get a higher draftee, Aces get another BALLER to attempt to get that third championship in a four year span; and the Sparks get workhorse Kelsey Plum who will play off Cameron Brink and Rickea Johnson extremely well. Everyone wins.
Women’s basketball reporter Alexa Philippou also had a few more details on the WNBA news. She states,
“Adding some context to today’s news:
Kelsey Plum joins L.A. hoping to be a Spark beyond 2025, sources tell me. As a cored player, Plum had to be traded to leave Las Vegas, but she signed off, i.e. chose, Los Angeles as her new destination.
Also involved in the trade:
Seattle gets Las Vegas’ 2026 first-round pick
Los Angeles gets Seattle’s 2026 second-round pick
Sources told ESPN the Sparks were ultimately uncertain about who would even be available to be drafted No. 2 overall. Combined with the hope of bringing Plum in for multiple years, that made it more palatable to give up the lottery pick.”
While there is some uncertainty surrounding this year’s draft. Especially, when it comes to highly sought after player, Paige Bueckers. Whether she will be available to be selected or not. It seems as though teams are moving full steam ahead, regardless in order to be ready to compete. So then, this season is already shaping up to be a really good one.
