Marlins GM Kim Ng Leaves Organization AFTER Taking Team to Playoffs
You would think that after taking a team to the playoffs, an organization would be grateful. Especially, if such a team has not sniffed the postseason in two decades (not counting the 2020 short season). But no… for some it is still clearly not enough. Case in point, the Marlins GM Kim Ng leaves the organization she took to 2023 playoffs; leaving everyone in complete shock.
How does this happen? What could be wrong? Well, while every move of Ng is not met with success, she still accomplishes something the Marlins franchise and fanbase does not get to enjoy yearly. An appearance in the postseason.
She built a team. They execute and win 84 games and punch their card into the postseason. And instead of accolades, she is met with… a demotion??
Yep, it’s true. Regarding this situation, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports:
“News at ESPN: Marlins GM Kim Ng left the organization after it tried to hire someone over her in the baseballl-operations department, a move that stunned the industry after she built Miami’s first full-season playoff team since 2003.
[Yes] the Miami Marlins wanted to hire a president of baseball operations over general manager Kim Ng, leading to her departure from the organization, sources told ESPN.
When reached, Ng declined comment. But sources said she would’ve been the No. 2 after constructing a playoff team.”

Interesting. Nevertheless, what does the former highest-ranking woman in a major men’s North American professional sports front office have to save about this latest move by Bruce Sherman, the Marlin’s owner? Ng told The Athletic:
“Last week, Bruce and I discussed his plan to reshape the baseball operations department. In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like. I felt it best to step away. I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida. This year was a great step forward for the organization and I will miss working with Skip and his coaches as well as all of the dedicated staff in baseball operations and throughout the front office. They are a very talented group and I wish them great success in the future.”
What a class act. We are sure Ng will have no problem finding work. However, the Marlins also now have a big job ahead of them… finding new leadership to keep momentum as well as all the winning going.
FUN FACT: Kim is not leaving without a little history going into the books. Kim NG became the first female GM to make the MLB playoffs in 2023. Congratulations Ng and we know you’ll only continue to shine.
