Mark Cuban Discusses Acquiring Klay Thompson and Possibility of NBA Billion Dollar Contracts

Cuban has been making media appearances and his rounds. During one of his numerous stops; he made time to talk to Shannon Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay podcast. They ran the gamet, shooting the breeze on a plethora of topics; however, two in particular caught our attention. Which ones? Well, the Mavericks “voice” Mark Cuban discussed details surrounding acquiring Klay Thompson and the possibility of NBA billion dollar contracts.

Yes, you read that last part correctly. Billion with a big ol’ “B.” Player contracts have been enlarging and skyrocketing at a record pace. In the NFL we have seen Dak Prescott agree to a $240 million contract with $231 million guaranteed. A contract that will have him basically earning $60 million a year. Crazy.

Then over in Major League Baseball this past offseason the Dodgers went scorched earth with their payroll and offered Shohei Ohtani $700 million. Which he course humbly accepted.

These two examples demonstrate that we are heading to an era where we could possibly see athletes make more than team owners. And Mark Cuban believes it can definitely happen. Regarding billion dollar contracts in the NBA he tells Shannon Sharpe,

“Yes! For sure. Luka is about to get A LOT! … They’ll be making more money a year than I will. You’re going to have players making more than the owners, and that’s okay. There is no league without them. They are the league and they earned every penny of it.”

Wild. But also in this interview, Cuban got a chance to get a few words in about Klay Thompson. While it may be weird for fans this upcoming season to see one half of the Splash Brothers in a different jersey than the Warriors. Cuban is ecstatic that the Mavs were able to pull Thompson over to their side. He says the timing “was right.”

In regards to how Klay came to be a part of the Dallas organization, Mark says,

“Credit goes to Nico [Harrison], Kyrie [Irving] and J-Kidd. They know him, they’ve played with him, they understand him. That’s literally why we brought Nico Harrison in, because of his relationships with players. And so they went out and spent time with him, got to know him better… I think Klay was ready for a move, right? You know, all the grief he got last year, particularly the way it ended, so the timing was right. And, you know, kudos to Klay for being willing to make the move and kudos to Nico, J-Kidd and Kai…

If “good” Klay Thompson shows up for Dallas this season. The Mavs are going to have quite the weapon on their hands. Yet, no matter what this NBA season is building to be a very good one. The season will officially begin on Tuesday, October 22nd.
