Maria Taylor and Mike Tirico Made History During Super Bowl 60

Yes, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots to win Super Bowl 60. However, you may not have realized some other history that was being made as the day’s events unfolded. So then, allow us to fill you in and get you historically up to speed. Here’s how Maria Taylor and Mike Tirico made history during Super Bowl 60.

Starting with Maria Taylor. Taylor has become just the 2nd woman ever to present the Lombardi Trophy to the champions; (Lesley Visser was first in 1992). Back in the day, Visser helped blaze the trail for women in broadcasting. Visser – is also the first and only and to be honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Therefore, it was such a class move for Maria Taylor to make sure to acknowledge this rich history involving Visser during her significant Super Bowl trophy presentation moment. Taylor states,

A moment I will never forget.

Thank you to Lesley Visser for opening the door. Because of that, I’m able to step into this role today. I can’t wait to see more women in this position for years to come.

Very nice. Visser got the nod and honor over three decades ago. And now some 34 years later, NFL fans witnessed Maria Taylor becoming just the second woman to do the SB trophy presentation. One last cool or interesting tidbit in this regard; Maria Taylor got the opportunity to hand the Super Bowl Lombardi trophy to her high school classmate Mike Macdonald (Seattle’s head coach).

So then, what about Tirico? What Super Bowl history is he now associated with for all time? Mike Tirico became the first-ever Syracuse alum to call the main TV broadcast of the Super Bowl. Moreover, Tirico is also the first U.S. sportscaster to call the Super Bowl and host the Winter Olympics in the same year.

Furthermore, ABC Detroit’s Brad Galli spoke on Mike’s big moment. Galli says, “Wishing the best to Mike Tirico, as he calls his first Super Bowl on TV. He will be just the 13th TV play-by-play voice in the history of football’s biggest game. He’s become a generous friend to so many of us in Michigan, and I appreciate all his kindness over the years. I love watching him call games, and can’t wait for this one.” We feel the same as Galli, it’s always awesome to see talent at work. And it was great to see Mike and Maria in action this weekend. Congratulations to both!
