Manager Bob Melvin Aka Mr. .500 Fired From San Francisco Giants
Career stats do not lie. While he may be a players manager and of course, a very well-respected manager. Being likable is not enough when it comes to a results based business. It is about winning and being a playoff contender, or you can hit the road. For the Bay’s now former manager, stringing together victories seemed to allude him. For this reason and more, manager Bob Melvin aka Mr. .500 was fired from the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
The season just ended yesterday and the Giants are wasting no time in getting started to improve the organization for next season. It had been clear as day that Melvin had been on the hot seat and being evaluated. Since Posey and other executives had gone almost radio silent when asked about Bob’s future with the franchise. Usually, not a good sign.
But what was probably the biggest red flag in this entire situation; was the fact that the San Diego Padres were absolutely fine letting Melvin go to a division rival. While Bob had gone to the playoffs with SD in 2022, the 2023 season was a complete meltdown. The roster underperformed despite the team having Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr., Josh Hader, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts.
On paper, many believed this was a World Series championship team. The 2023 gold and brown were supposed to go all the way. But the Padres missed the playoffs and were more than happy to part with Bob Melvin once the season concluded.
Bob Melvin Fired From Giants
With San Francisco, things have not gone any better. Melvin went 161-163 in his 2 seasons as Giants manager. Good enough to continue the trend of him being a .500 career manager.
It is strange to see a former multi-year manager of the year winner now be fired twice in the span of half a decade. Melvin’s best years were with the Athletics; but for some reason he can’t seem to replicate the same magic.
Bob is often called out by disgruntled fans due to his lineups and pitching management. While the Giants can’t place full blame on Melvin; there are other holes and issues to consider and fix. However, the franchise can point to some blown leads and game losses due to Bob’s bullpen decisions. And that alone was enough to put the nail in the coffin.

Nonetheless, for 2026 Melvin’s “talents” are no longer wanted within the Giants organization. Buster Posey told the media on Monday after the firing of Melvin, “After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team.” The team’s social media platforms also announced the dismissal shortly after.
Where Bob will land next or if he will retire remains to be seen. However, the Giants have taken yet another step towards getting back on track. They will now begin the hunt for a new skipper, new leadership that will support their ultimate goal of winning another title.
