Malik Cunningham Transitioning To WR With Baltimore Ravens

He was a quarterback for the New England Patriots. But last December he was signed off the Patriots practice squad by the Baltimore Ravens. Now Malik Cunningham is transitioning from QB to WR with the Baltimore Ravens. Cunningham had been the third string QB behind Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe in 2023. Jones is now in Jacksonville with the Jaguars and Zappe is still on the Patriots roster but his days are likely numbered.

Cunningham showed promise during the preseason last year which led to him getting a deal with $200,000 in guaranteed money. That was a Patriots record for an undrafted rookie free agent. So why did the Patriots let him go? According to former head coach Bill Belichick the team tried to keep him. However, he said, “Yeah, but I think at the end of the day, they sold him on the opportunity, the offense; he had Lamar (Jackson). Certainly, their offense suits Malik better than probably any other offense in the league does, so it makes sense.”

Patriots fans were very displeased with the loss of Cunningham. He had been a bright spot in what was a very dismal season for the team. Yet somehow he never threw a pass in a regular season game for the Patriots. But that may have been the case because Belichick began working him out at receiver. So it seems the Ravens saw the same thing as Belichick as indicated by Ravens Editorial Director Ryan Mink. He posted this on X.com: “Malik Cunningham is now officially listed as a WR (not QB) on the Ravens’ roster, btw. He made that look like the right call today with several grabs.”

With the transition of Cunningham to wide receiver, that leaves four quarterbacks on the Ravens roster: Lamar Jackson, Josh Johnson, Emory Jones and Devin Leary. But there have been other quarterbacks that became wide receivers. Julian Edelman is a prime example. He played QB at Kent State but he developed into a wide receiver with the Patriots. And he was so successful that some even say he has a shot at getting inducted into the Hall of Fame.

If all goes well, perhaps Cunningham could be the next great QB to WR transformation. Given he and Lamar Jackson were teammates for a year in college maybe that will help with the transition process. At any rate, Cunningham is an athletic and talented player, something that every team can use.
