Magic Johnson Says Game 5 Winner Controls World Series-Statistically Why He’s Right

In Vegas, throughout the country and in sports bars there is a burning question this week. Who will win the Fall Classic? LA or Toronto? Former Lakers legend and part Dodgers owner Magic Johnson says that the Game 5 winner most likely controls the outcome of the World Series.

While of course there were those online that gave Magic a hard way to go over his take. Truthfully he is not wrong. Actually he makes a good point and argument.

Before we quickly explain, here’s exactly what Johnson had to say on the World Series. The NBA champion and Hall of Famer mentioned, “With the Series being 2-2, Game 5 is very important. Whichever team wins takes control of the Series!”

What do the numbers and history reveal? Well, curiosity got the best of us so we looked it up. According to historical figures and data; in 68 instances where the series was tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner went on to claim the series 46 times. This means that when tied at 2-2, the Game 5 winner has won the series 67.6% of the time. Any team competing would love to have those odds.

67 is more than 50. So then, Game 5 winners  bump up their chances of becoming champions. And Toronto extended the series allowing themselves to play at home and enjoy the advantage of their screaming fans again.

Major League Baseball took a moment to discuss all of the above. The MLB stated,

“The Blue Jays didn’t just win Game 4; they reclaimed their home-field advantage, with Game 6 in Rogers Centre on Friday now assured and a potential Game 7 on Saturday also taking place on Canadian turf.

When a best-of-seven postseason series with the current 2-3-2 format has been tied after four games, the team playing Game 5 on the road – before returning home for Games 6-7 – has gone on to win that series 35 of 61 times (57.4%).

Meanwhile, in any best-of-seven series tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner also has won the series 46 of 68 times (67.6%).”

So yes, as we all know Game 5 is a big deal. Statistics reveal that the victor will have a better chance of hoisting a trophy and spraying champagne. Therefore, tune in to see all the Game 5 action unfold on FOX Sports.
