Magic Johnson Reacts to Denver Nuggets GM and Head Coach Firings
Normally, when a team is performing absolutely terrible, you expect heads to roll after the season. Or depending on the severity of bad play, even at times during the regular season. However, now we are witnessing something a bit different. Franchises are steadily cleaning house AFTER achieving and experiencing much success. A former NBA player spoke out on Tuesday, regarding this growing anomaly. Magic Johnson reacts to the Denver Nuggets GM and head coach firings just days before the postseason.
An odd collection of news since the Denver Nuggets just won a championship title back in 2023. And this year they are in position to make the playoffs again. A tough feat, especially being in the Western Conference that has been bottlenecked with teams battling to stay out of the play-in. As for Denver, the Nuggets are currently 47-32 and 4th in the West.
Yet, Denver has now fired their GM and head coach with just a few games left to go. Extremely strange since Michael Malone is the winningest coach in franchise history since being hired in 2015. Additionally, the Nuggets had been in contract extension talks before the 2024-2025 season with GM Calvin Booth. Just nothing materialized since both parties could not come to an agreement.
Nevertheless, Magic Johnson took to social media to discuss just how wild this year has shaped up to be. Magic states,
“I’ve been part of the NBA family for over 45 years and I’ve never seen a season like this! First, two superstars get traded in the middle of the regular season, Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, and now two coaches, Denver’s Michael Malone and the Grizzlies’s Taylor Jenkins, get fired before the end of the regular season and their teams have already secured a spot in the Playoffs.”

Baffling. However, this firing despite winning trend only seems to be growing throughout the NBA. Organizations are steadily moving on even though enjoying successful outcomes.
As ESPN researchers indicate, “With Michael Malone being fired from Denver, FOUR of the last six NBA coaches to win the Finals are no longer with the team they won with.” Moreover, NBA analyst Yossi Gozlan adds, “With the exception of Steve Kerr, all championship winning head coaches between 2020-2023 have been fired within two years of winning the championship.”
Interesting indeed. Well, while most continue to scratch their heads over these recent developments. The Nuggets are moving on and steaming full speed ahead. David Adelman will assume their head coaching role for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.
