Magic Johnson Pursuing Majority Ownership Stake in Future NBA Expansion Team in Las Vegas
With the NBA Board Governors deciding to move forward with exploring offers for expansion teams in the sports cities of Las Vegas and Seattle. Several entities are coming forward wanting to throw their hats into the expansion team ownership mix. One notable name is already associated with a number of successful franchises. Magic Johnson is currently pursuing a majority ownership stake in a future NBA expansion team in Las Vegas.
Magic Johnson is a sports star and executive figure that is synonymous with winning. During his remarkable 13-year career, he led the Lakers to five NBA championships (1980, ’82, ’85, ’87 and ’88) and nine appearances in the NBA Finals. And the winning didn’t stop when his tenure as a basketball player ended.
As an owner, you can now tack on 13 or 14 more rings to his official total (depending on how you want to look at the big picture). After the Los Angeles Dodgers won their second consecutive championship in 2026 (Magic is part-owner of LA), Johnson told the media, “I’m happy for myself ’cause that’s 18 championship rings,” Magic said as he laughed with the FOX Sports: MLB crew. “I got to throw that in… So, this is a blessing. 18 Championship rings for me! NCAA Championship with MSU, 11 Lakers (5 playing, 5 as an owner and 1 as an executive), 1 LA Sparks, 1 LAFC, 1 Team Liquid, and now 3 with the Dodgers!”

NBA and NFL reporter, Evan Sidery discussed the moves Johnson has made thus far to be a part of the NBA Las Vegas expansion landscape. Sidery reports,
“Magic Johnson is aggressively pursuing a majority ownership stake in a future NBA expansion team in Las Vegas.
Johnson met with Nevada governor Joe Lombardo and others this month to discuss his plan of ownership and building a state-of-the-art arena on the Las Vegas Strip.
The Lakers legend is already a minority owner of the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Dodgers, LA Sparks, Los Angeles FC, and NWSL’s Washington Spirit.”
The NBA’s Board of Governors unanimously approved a process Wednesday to explore expansion bids only from Las Vegas and Seattle. The league is hiring PJT Partners to review ownership groups, arenas, and economic impacts. Bids could reach $7 billion to $10 billion each, with a target debut in the 2028-29 season.
