Madrid Open Loses Power

Madrid Open Loses Power—Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva to Quarterfinals

Very unexpected. Out of nowhere, Spain, Portugal and other parts of Europe abruptly lost power. This led to the cancellation of some matches; however, before this sudden change of events; two athletes were able to compete and made another stunning mark in tennis. Yes, before the chaotic Madrid Open loses power situation, young tennis stars, Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva win big and advance to the quarterfinals.

Beginning with Gauff, we must say that Coco looks absolutely LOCKED in on the court. Her serving is looking good and she seems to be performing more efficiently with every match she has played in this week. In her latest contest, Coco took on Belinda Bencic and made short work of her. Thus, defeating Bencic in pure domination style 6-4, 6-2.

Furthermore, this is a big feat for Gauff in her career so far. This is the first time in her career that she has reached the Madrid Quarterfinal. And it is also her 17th win of 2025. Gauff is having fun as well as working hard and it clearly shows.

However, we also must shine a quick well-deserved light on Mirra Andreeva as well. The youthful superstar on the rise has now won 17 of her last 19 matches! At the Madrid Open she most recently defeated Yulia Starodubtseva. While Yulia put up a better fight in the second set, Andreeva still proved to be quite a force to be reckoned with on the court. Mirra Andreeva took down Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4; earning herself a trip to the quarterfinals as well.

This achievement is also a MAJOR win for Mirra. This means Andreeva has now reached back to back quarterfinals. And it is all the more impressive when you remember she only just 17 years old.

Additionally, Mirra has now become the youngest woman to register 10 wins in a single WTA 1000 event since 2009. She hits this mark just one day shy of her 18th birthday. So one more amazing accomplishment under her belt at 17.

Now what about these severe outages? Well, the situation seems to be improving, with a return in power. However, what was the cause? According to Reuters news agency and USA Today, “the Portuguese grid operator, said a rare atmospheric phenomenon in Spain from extreme temperature variations was behind the massive outage. The Portuguese National Cybersecurity Center issued a statement saying there was no sign the outage was due to a cyberattack.”

Well, it certainly is a positive that there was no attack and the problem is being resolved. Our thoughts are with all the athletes and everyone affected by this electrical disruption. And we sincerely hope everyone stays safe.
