Lucas Giolito and Red Sox Agree to Two Year Deal
Literally, every team in the MLB needs pitching this off-season. And Boston is finally coming alive to help fill out their pitching staff. In fact, they are all in on a righty pitcher. The contract? Well, Lucas Giolito and Red Sox agree to two year deal worth over $35 million dollars.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan is one of the first to confirm this winter deal. Passan states,
BREAKING: Right-hander Lucas Giolito and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a two-year, $38.5 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first season, sources tell ESPN.
Boston lands its first big signing of the winter. The question now is: Will there be more?
Lucas Giolito is a solid signing for Boston — lots of innings and strikeouts. But he also got upward of $20 million a season coming off back-to-back years with ERAs of 4.90 and 4.88, and he allowed 41 homers this season. Opt-out lets him parlay a good year into free agency at 30.

There is always one thing that baseball fans always want to know when there is a new signing. Is this a good move? Simple answer… yes, it is for the Red Sox. Helps them financially and in terms of production currently as well as in the future.
Jeff Passan seems to agree as well. In fact, he gave a nice explanation as to why. Regarding the contract, Jeff reveals,
“Giolito’s deal with Boston gives him an $18M salary in 2024 and a $1M buyout if he opts out. If not, the salary for 2025 is $19M. There is a conditional option for 2026 — $14M club option if he throws under 140 innings in 2025, $19M mutual option for 140+, with a $1.5M buyout.”
Well, that sounds fair in the money department. What are some other facts to know about the guy?
For one thing, Lucas Giolito is just 2 years removed from 3 straight seasons of receiving Cy Young votes. Moreover, he also threw a career high 184.1 IP last season.
As mentioned, at the outset, the Red Sox just added a much needed arm. He is a very solid addition for the Boston ball club. Also, with the Dodgers making such a splash with Shohei Ohtani this offseason. Sox fans will be happy to know that Giolito has K’d the $700M Ohtani a few times too.
