Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic Suffered a Grade 2 Hamstring Strain—Out Indefinitely

He was having a MVP caliber season, but now he may not even be part of the postseason scene. In a tough loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Luka Doncic suffered a Grade 2 Hamstring strain. Absolutely brutal news for the purple and gold.

Luka Doncic underwent an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of his left hamstring injury which occurred during the second half against OKC. At the time Luka appeared to tweak his left ankle/hammy; however, he was up and walking on his own power back to the Lakers’ locker room with 7:39 remaining in the 3rd Q.

After his full examination on Friday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the matter stating,

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is out indefinitely due to a left hamstring injury, sources tell me and Dave McMenamin. He will miss the remainder of the regular season and his status is uncertain beyond that.”

Therefore, Doncic is out indefinitely with a Grade 2 hamstring strain for the rest of this season, but could still be eligible for season awards through an exception. Luka Doncic’s agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball released an official statement explaining how this is plausible. Duffy says,

“This season, Luka Dončić has performed at a historic level, leading the league in scoring, carrying the Lakers to third place in the Western Conference and placing himself in the middle of one of the most tightly contested MVP races in memory. To ensure that Luka’s incredible accomplishments this season are rightly honored and he can be considered for the league’s end-of-season awards, we intend to apply for an “Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge” to the 65-game rule. Luka missed two games this season for the birth of his second child in Slovenia. His daughter was born on Dec. 4 on another continent, and yet he was back in the United States competing with his team on Dec. 6. Luka has gone to great lengths to show up for his team and this league this season. His record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books, despite last night’s unfortunate injury and other extraordinary circumstances. We look forward to working with the NBAPA and the league office to ensure a fair outcome in this matter.”

So then, now we wait. Wait to see if Luka heals in time to make an impact in the postseason (average timetable to return for a Grade 2 hamstring strain is 3-6 weeks; the playoffs start in 15 days). And to see if things are ruled in his favor when it comes to end of season awards. An arbitrator will rule on Doncic’s case after the regular season.

But the Lakers are still staying positive despite this extraordinary loss when it comes to their roster. LeBron James expressed to the media after the OKC matchup, “We still will be [together]. Obviously we’ll be tested with the head of the snake [missing] … But nothing is rattled. It’s one game, it’s part of the NBA season, it’s the defending champions.”
