Los Angeles Kings And General Manager Rob Blake Parted Ways

It wasn’t too much of a surprise when the news came out. Many expected this outcome to take place and now it has. On Monday May 5 the team made the announcement that the Los Angeles Kings and general manager Rob Blake have parted ways. Team president Luc Robitaille, who made the announcement, said that the search for a replacement would begin immediately. Despite not having a timeline, Robitaille is aware of the urgency. He stated:

“We don’t have a timeline, but obviously we understand the urgency. We know what’s coming up,” Robitaille said. “There’s free agency coming up, the draft’s coming up, so, like I said, we started working on it Monday. You’re putting a list together. You suddenly have a lot of friends, you get a lot of texts when that happens. So, we understand that there’s an urgency, but at the same time, it’s very important for this franchise, so hopefully it will be as soon as possible, but we want to make sure.”

Blake served as the general manager for eight seasons orchestrating a 309-238-71 regular-season record. The team also clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times, but they never won a postseason series. However, the Kings recently suffered their fourth consecutive time being bounced from the first-round of the playoffs at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Naturally, this was unacceptable and therefore the mutual parting was inevitable. In a statement, Robitaille expressed his gratitude for Blake:

“On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Rob for his dedication to the L.A. Kings and the passion he brought to the role. Reaching this understanding wasn’t easy and I appreciate Rob’s partnership in always working toward what is best for the Kings.

“Rob deserves a great deal of credit and respect for elevating us to where we are today. He has been an important part of the Kings and will always be appreciated for what he has meant to this franchise.”

With the departure of the general manager, the fate of head coach Jim Hiller remains a question. Hiller initially became the interim coach during the 2023-2024 season guiding the team to a playoff berth. Then he continued his success in his first full season as the coach. However, he has been saddled with a lot of the blame for the team’s playoff issues. So once the new GM is hired he’ll have to determine if Hiller should be kept.

In the meantime, whoever is selected for the position will need to consider some things. Such as improving the defense and clearing some cap space to retain some of the current players. Needless to say, filling the general manager job is of the utmost importance.
