Los Angeles Chargers And Pro Bowl LT Rashawn Slater Agreed To New Extension
Last year his head coach said, “I know the question is gonna come up about weapons… We look at offensive linemen as weapons.” And today the team took a major step in addressing those weapons by extending one of them. The Los Angeles Chargers and two-time Pro Bowl LT Rashawn Slater agreed to a new contract extension. It’s a multi-year extension that will keep the left tackle in Los Angeles through the 2029 season. While also making him the highest-paid offensive lineman ever.
Regarding more details about the extension, Adam Schefter wrote:
“ESPN sources: Chargers and left tackle Rashawn Slater reached agreement today on a four-year, $114 million contract extension that includes a record $92 million guaranteed and now makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Deal was negotiated between @CAA_football and the Chargers’ front office in recent weeks.”
Slater was selected by Los Angeles in the first round (13th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. Another member of that class is, Dallas Cowboys’ Micah Parson, who was the 12th pick in the draft. Interestingly he is waiting for a new contract of his own which could potentially make him the highest-paid pass rusher.
As pointed out on the team’s website, Slater has been an iron man starting in all 52 career appearances. Thanks to his blind-side protection prowess, quarterback Justin Herbert has set numerous league-wide passing records. Last season he played a large role in helping the offense to only commit eight turnovers, setting a franchise record and tying for the second-fewest offensive turnovers in a single season in NFL history. However, his durability and dependability had already been showcased while he was in college.

He attended Northwestern from 2017 to 2019 during which time started 37-of-38 games over three seasons. And he earned All-Big Ten Conference recognition twice. Initially he started at right tackle in 12-of-13 appearances and again at right tackle in 14 starts in 2018. That year he helped lead the program to the Big Ten Championship Game. It wasn’t until his final season that he started all 11 games at left tackle, allowing zero sacks and receiving all-conference honors.
But all his collegiate and professional hard work has paid off with his new extension. As the highest paid offensive lineman he will now earn more on a per year basis than:
- Tristan Wirfs: $28.12M
- Penei Sewell: $28M
- Trent Williams: $27.55M
- Christian Darrisaw: $26M
No doubt quarterback Justin Herbert was happy to hear that his blindside protector will be with him for a while. And we say congratulations to Rashawn Slater on securing his bag!
