Los Angeles Angels’ Anthony Rendon To Undergo Hip Surgery

Well the injury bug has bit the “Ant” yet again. It seems to be an unending battle for the beleaguered third baseman. Now the Los Angeles Angels’ Anthony Rendon is to undergo hip surgery. According to general manager Perry Minasian, Anthony Rendon is having hip surgery and is expected to miss a significant amount of time. He elaborated a bit further on what happened:

“He had a setback late in the offseason with his rehab,” Minasian said. “He’s going to have hip surgery here in the very near future. I don’t put time frames on it, but it’s going to be a while until he’s back. He had some difficulty with his rehab over the last couple weeks, and we had a couple different doctors take a look at it. It’s a long-term rehab. We’ll see how it goes.”

Rendon was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2013 and was with them from 2013-2019. He put up great stats including an OPS of 1.010 in his last season with the Nats in 2019. Along with 34 home runs and a major-league-leading 126 RBIs. He then signed a seven-year, $245 million deal after the 2019 campaign with the Los Angeles Angels debuting during the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 season. Rendon has since suffered multiple injuries while with the Angels. In July 2022 he underwent season-ending right hip surgery. Now he is going to need the procedure done on his other hip.

In 2024, he was on the injured list three different times with hamstring, lower back and oblique issues. All together he’s been on the injured list 12 times since 2021. And he has played in only 257 games and missed 451 with the Angels. He finished the 2024 season with a .218 batting average with zero home runs and 14 RBIs in 206 at-bats. The stats show that his production has steadily declined since joining the Angels. And his injuries and lack of production makes his contract prohibitive. He’s still under contract for $38.5 million each year in ’25 and ’26.

So with Rendon  now opening the season on the 60-day injured list that clears the way for Yoán Moncada to assume the starting job. The angels reached a one-year deal with Moncada. However, he has dealt with some injury problems of his own, appearing in just 208 games since the beginning of 2022. How things will work out at the position remains to be seen. And it doesn’t help that Rendon has declared a lack of interest in baseball.

In the last two years alone, Rendon said baseball has “never been a top priority for me,” complained about the length of the MLB season, and volunteered that he has been contemplating retirement since shortly after his major league career began. Yikes!
