Longtime Veteran Marcedes Lewis Re-Signed With Chicago Bears

Longevity is not a word usually associated with the career of an NFL player. But that word can definitely be applied in this case. Longtime veteran Marcedes Lewis just re-signed with the Chicago Bears. He was briefly on the free agent market but yesterday the veteran inked a one-year deal with the team. Lewis who just turned 40 last month, will be entering his 19th season in the league, currently no other player has played longer than Lewis.  Lewis is also the second oldest player in the league just behind Aaron Rodgers.

He started his career when he was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was taken in the first round with the 28th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Former running back teammate, Maurice Jones-Drew was also selected during the first day of that draft. Both of them went on to have long and successful careers with Jaguars. However, after 12 seasons with the Jaguars, Lewis was released and signed with the Green Bay Packers in May 2018. After spending five seasons with the Packers, he signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears in 2023.

While with the Jaguars, he earned a Pro Bowl selection and second-team All-Pro honors in 2010. In 2023 he broke a tie with Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten as having played the most seasons at the tight end position. Lewis also ranks third all-time among tight ends in career games played (268). Just behind Jason Witten (271) and Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez (270). And now since he is returning to the Bears for the 2024 season he is likely to takeover the top spot.

With all his experience, no doubt he will be able to support and mentor rookie quarterback sensation Caleb Williams. Lewis’ veteran leadership was a boon for the Bears locker room and will continue to be such next season. This was recognized by the Bears last year when he was signed to a contract. “With Marcedes, we look forward to adding the value of his 17 years of NFL experience to our locker room,” general manager Ryan Poles said, “in addition to the toughness and the mentality that he plays with. Thank you to Bus Cook for helping make him a Chicago Bear.”

Despite his age, this re-signing looks to be a good decision. It should be fun to watch him continue being a top-notch NFL tight end. Congrats Mr. Lewis!
