Longtime Cornerback Darius Slay Announced His Retirement from the NFL
He spent a prosperous 13-year career playing professional football for the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills in December 2025 after being waived by the Steelers. However, he refused to show up. Prior to that he had signed a one-year deal for $10 million last offseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And now longtime cornerback Darius Slay has announced his retirement from the NFL. During his career he had no problem living up to his college nickname “BigPlay Slay.”
His announcement was posted on Instagram, where he stated:
“Dear football, I wanna thank you for all you’ve done for me. I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was 5yrs old for an amazing 13yrs at the highest level. Football was my peace, my joy, my everything. This game put me in a position to help take care of my family and loved ones and I’m forever grateful. It’s hard to say goodbye, but God has a new chapter for me and I’m ready to turn the page and start my new journey. To all my BigPlay fans, I will always appreciate the love and support y’all have given to me. I couldn’t have done it without you. Just A kid from Brunswick, GA with BIG dreams…

He played his college career at Mississippi State before being selected by the Detroit Lions in the 2013 NFL Draft. His first seven years were spent with the Lions and then he joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. Slay was an important part of their secondary helping the Eagles win their second Super Bowl in 2024. However, he recently said, “No team but the Eagles can call me.”

Apparently, the Eagles haven’t called since Buffalo won the waiver to claim him. He decided to take some time off to consider if he wanted to continue his playing career instead of reporting to the Bills. He has since decided to retire and will be leaving the game as a six-time Pro Bowl cornerback. Slay currently ranks third among active players with 28 career interceptions. Right behind Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith and New England Patriots safety Kevin Byard.
