London Calling And Other NFL Week 5 Sunday Action

London Calling And Other NFL Week 5 Sunday Action

There were close calls, blowouts, and a rookie QB breakout game. On any given Sunday you never know what might happen. The Jets looked like they may have been jet-lagged as they kicked off the slate of international games. Let’s delve into the London calling and other NFL Week 5 Sunday Action. We’ll start with what happened across the pond.

Jets @ Vikings – Aaron Rodgers and his Jets looked dazed and confused for much of the game. He threw a pick-six in the first quarter and another interception when he overthrew Allen Lazard. They pulled themselves together in the second half while Sam Darnold and his Vikings fell apart. Darnold wasn’t connecting with his receivers and the defense let the Jets back in the game. But Stephon Gilmore sealed the 23-17 Vikings victory when he intercepted Rodgers at the end of the game.

Panthers @ Bears – Caleb Williams had the game today all the fans were looking for. The Bears scored four touchdowns on five possessions, a first this season. However, the Panthers defense was already down three defensive starters and then lost pass rusher Jadaveon Clowney with a shoulder injury during the game. Meanwhile the Bears defense was all over Panthers’ QB Andy Dalton. It ended as a 36-10 blowout win for the Bears.

Ravens @ Bengals – This game was an explosion of offense as the two teams traded scores all game long. The Ravens put up 520 yards and 30 first downs. Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins torched the Ravens’ secondary. Joe Burrows’ deep-ball accuracy was almost otherworldly. However, Lamar Jackson willed his team to victory. It was incredible how he led a comeback down double digits multiple times in the fourth quarter. After a fumble in overtime and a Bengals missed field goal, the Ravens got the 41-38 win.

Bills @ Texans – The Bills got off to a slow start again. Their offensive timing was off and the Texans defense got pressure on QB Josh Allen. After C.J. Stroud hit Nico Collins for a 67 yard touchdown, Collins left with a hamstring injury. The Texans’ offense struggled with consistency the rest of the way, Stroud had an interception and a fumble. The Bills came back strong tying the game in the fourth quarter. But the Texans held on for the 20-23 win with a 59-yard field goal.

Colts @ Jaguars – It was Trevor Lawrence’s birthday today and if he wished for a win he got it. He had his best game of the season as he completed 28 of 34 passes for a career-high 371 yards and two TD passes. But Joe Flacco quarterbacked the Colts just fine throwing for 359 yards and three TD passes on 33-of-44 passing. The problem was that the Jaguars’ defense allowed 24 fourth-quarter points. 17 of which came in a wild four-minute span that erased the Jags’ two-TD lead. Jacksonville kicked a 49-yard field goal to win the game 34-37. Jags got their first win.

Dolphins @ Patriots – This game was as horrible as many expected it to be. Missed field goals, penalties and a lack of execution were just a few things that went wrong. Both teams are a mess but if Miami gets their QB back they can turn things around. For the Patriots things don’t look good.

More Week 5 Sunday Games Notes

Browns @ Commanders – Deshaun Watson had an awful game and was terrorized all game long by a not-great Commanders defense. The Browns’ offensive line was offensive, not providing any protection. Initially QB Jayden Daniels faced some adversity and his accuracy was less than what it had been. But he used his legs to make plays and keep drives alive. As the game went on the Jayden we’re used to emerged and hung plenty of points on the Browns. The Commanders whipped up on the Browns to the tune of 13-34.

Raiders @ Broncos – The Raiders jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter. But the Broncos answered with 13 points in the second quarter and never looked back. Gardner Minshew was benched just before the third quarter ended having thrown two interceptions. Aidan O’Connell came in and was intercepted by Patrick Surtain. That led to Bo Nix tossing a 9 yard touchdown to Josh Reynolds. Nix is coming into his own while the Raiders look to be in disarray, losing the game 18-34.

Cardinals @  49ers – It was unexpected seeing the Cardinals get a win over the 49ers leaving both teams with a 2-3 record. The 49ers failed to score any second half points while the Cardinals and Kyler Murray put up 14 points. Two interceptions, a turnover on downs and a fumble killed the 49ers. The Cardinals took advantage of all the turnovers by scoring. On the final drive Brock Purdy completed a 15-yard pass to George Kittle. But was intercepted on the very next play ending their chance for a comeback win. The Cardinals held on for the 24-23 victory.

Late Afternoon Game Action

Packers @ Rams – The Rams are having n0 luck with the NFC North division. Last week they lost 18-24 to the Chicago Bears. This week it was a 24-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Jordan Love, still recovering from his knee injury, looked much more comfortable by the second half. Matthew Stafford was without multiple OL starters and his top two receivers. So he wasn’t his usual efficient self. Packers safety Xavier McKinney picked off Stafford shifting momentum to Green Bay. The Rams couldn’t pick up a fourth down ending their hopes of a comeback.

Giants @ Seahawks – On a 4th-and-goal run, New York Giants running back Eric Gray reached for the goal line and fumbled. That led to Seattle Seahawks defensive back Rayshawn Jenkins picking up the loose ball and returning it 101 yards for a touchdown. The longest return touchdown in Seattle Seahawks franchise history. A 47-yard field goal was attempted by the Seahawks with just over a minute remaining. But Giants’ linebacker Isaiah Simmons leaped through the A-gap without touching a blocker and blocked it. Bryce Ford-Wheaton returned the ball for the game-sealing 60-yard touchdown. QB Daniel Jones had his best game this season as the Giants won 29-20.

Sunday Night Game Goes Past Midnight

Cowboys @ Steelers – Due to a severe thunderstorm the Sunday Night Football game was delayed. They finally got underway at 9:45pm ET. It was a low scoring affair in the first half as the defenses were putting QB’s Justin Fields and Dak Prescott under pressure. Justin Fields was off on his deep passes but running back Najee Harris got Pittsburgh’s running game going.

In the third quarter Justin Fields started stringing some pass completions together and the Steelers scored their first touchdown. However, the Steelers defense was not as stout as it usually is and let the Cowboys march down the field. With 35 seconds on the clock on 3rd & goal the Steelers defense made a great goal-line stand. But on 4th down Prescott connected with RB Jalen Tolbert for a one-yard pass to score the go-ahead touchdown. Cowboys won 20-17.
