Lions Pounced On the Broncos On Saturday Night

The defenses came out swinging in this game. However, the Lions pounced on the Broncos on Saturday night. On the Lions first possession the Broncos had tight coverage on the Lions receivers and forced a punt. When the Broncos got the ball they had a 40 yard pass completion and an 11 yard run. But the Lions rushed Russell Wilson and forced a fumble.

Denver’s defense expressed their displeasure, not allowing the Lions to get a first down. Detroit punted the ball and the Lions’ defense immediately stuffed Denver’s run game then broke up their passes. And it was another punt. This was how things went until the Lions broke through and scored the first touchdown in the second quarter.

However, things didn’t improve for Russell Wilson. He was harassed and sacked and not able to connect with his receivers. After the Broncos punted, Jared Goff marched the Lions down the field. Denver’s defense couldn’t slow down the passing game and the Lions scored another touchdown.

It looked as if Denver was finally moving the ball on their next possession. But the drive bogged down as Wilson was chased out of the pocket and the Broncos punted again. Once again the Lions took possession and went on the march.

This time it was their running game that gouged the Denver defense. They capped the drive with a pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown who flipped his way into the end zone. The half ended with the Lions up 0-21.

The Broncos got the ball to open the third quarter. Despite being chased around Russell Wilson connected with his receivers. Then a defensive penalty got them into the red zone. On 3rd & goal he hit Jordan Humphrey for their first touchdown.

This season the Lions have struggled in the third quarter. However, they unleashed their running game and picked up critical third downs. The drive was punctuated by a touchdown catch by La Porta. Thus banishing their third quarter woes by taking a 7-28 lead.

I think the Broncos got hosed on their last possession of the third quarter. It looked like the receiver broke the plane but they ruled his knee was down first. On the next try the receiver broke the plane but they marked it short. Then they called an offensive offsides which no one one was able to identify. So the Broncos had to settle for a field goal.

The Lions won the game 17-42. Sean Payton, Denver’s head coach was seen screaming at Russell Wilson on the sidelines. But the blame for this loss lies squarely with him.
