Lionel Messi Named 2025 MLS Most Valuable Player—First in History to Win Consecutive Seasons
He’s simply the best. The trophies just keep coming for Leo. After a regular season to remember, leading the league at 38-years-old with 29 goals and 48 goal contributions in the regular season. Lionel Messi has been named the 2025 MLS Most Valuable Player, becoming the first player in history to win the award in consecutive seasons.
Yes, Messi continues to inspire the next generation. He is the only player in league history to record at least 36 goal contributions in a season multiple times (2024, 2025) and is the second player in MLS annals to lead the league in both goals scored (29) and assists (19), joining Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco in 2015 (22 goals, 16 assists).
This year Messi was also named to the 2025 MLS Best XI last month; after winning the 2025 MLS Golden Boot presented by Audi. The Argentine legend then played a key role in Inter Miami’s run in the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs. Which saw the Club clinch its historic first MLS Cup title.
Upon the announcement of his historic MVP, a reporter asked Messi, “You’ve become the first player in MLS history to win the MVP award for two years in a row. What does that mean to you?” While some would focus on their own skills and abilities; that’s not Lionel’s style. He well understands his greatness while also recognizing there is no “I” in team. Therefore, to us, Messi had the perfect response. To the reporter he replies,
“Well, first of all, I’m extremely grateful for this recognition. It’s always nice to receive individual awards.
But of course, I want to share this award with my teammates, because I also won the Golden Boot award, and that’s thanks to all of their help.
I’m so happy to have received this award, and to be the first in the history of MLS to win it two years in a row, and I’m extremely grateful for that.”
The commissioner of Major League Soccer, Don Garber, released a statement regarding Messi and his amazing performance and recent accolades. Garber states,
“Today was another historic moment for MLS as we celebrated Lionel Messi — the 2025 Landon Donovan MLS MVP and the first player in league history to win back-to-back MVP honors.
A season of records, inspiration, and unforgettable moments.
Congratulations, Leo, and thank you for showing every young player what the “freedom to dream” truly looks like.”
