Lindsey Vonn Shut Down The Doubters Winning Silver Medal

Lindsey Vonn Shut Down The Doubters Winning Silver Medal

Some people scoffed when she said she was coming out of retirement. They thought it would be a waste of time considering her age and her injury history. But she was feeling good about her recovery and felt that she could give it a go. And this past weekend Lindsey Vonn shut down all the doubters by winning a silver medal. She took to the podium right here in America at the Stifel Sun Valley World Cup Finals women’s super-G.

And in so doing she shattered a record, becoming the oldest woman to podium in Alpine skiing World Cup history at the ripe old age of 40! The previous record was 34 years of age. Expressing her jubilation, Vonn said, “It was (expletive) hard. This is not easy what I’m doing. It just felt really good to say I did it. That I can still do it.” It has been six years since she left behind ski racing and only 11 months since her partial knee replacement. Just competing at 40 with younger competitors is difficult enough, but to finish second place in the super-G is just incredible.

But Vonn doesn’t allow her age to dictate what she does. She went on to say, “Age is just a number,” Vonn said. “If you feel good and you’re mentally still driven and you work hard, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.” Lindsey also was appreciative of being able to ski in front of the home crowd. Throughout her career it was rare for her to be able to ski a speed event on home soil. And the crowd showed their appreciation for her presence as they loudly cheered her as she crossed the finish line.

She was told by many people to just quit and give up, but she didn’t listen to the naysayers. “It’s been a rough season of people saying that I can’t, that I’m too old, that I’m not good enough anymore, and I think I proved everyone wrong.”

This race was the last one of the season but it was really just a stepping stone to something bigger. Vonn now has her sights set on the 2026 Olympics. She now hopes to race at a fifth Olympics at the Milan Cortina Games in Italy. No doubt this silver medal win will give her the confidence boost to make that dream come true. She has silenced the doubters and can continue to prove them wrong going forward. Vonn posted some additional comments on her social media account:

“After everything I’ve been through, I fought my way back on to the podium!! I can’t even start to describe what this means to me… I have been overwhelmed with emotion and support from so many people; I want to say thank you to everyone who believed in me! Going to enjoy this moment and reflect. More soon!”

Congratulations Lindsey, you earned it!
