Legendary USC And Rams Coach John Robinson Passed Away At 89

He and John Madden had been friends since they were little boys growing up in the Bay Area. Both boys went on to become great football coaches in California. We had already lost John Madden and now legendary USC and Los Angeles Rams head coach John Robinson has passed away at 89. He died on Monday Nov. 11 in Baton Rouge, La. of complications from pneumonia. Prior to becoming the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Robinson became a (University of Southern California) USC Trojan assistant for 3 seasons (1972-74).

He served two stints as head coach of USC (1976–1982, 1993–1997). During those times he led the Trojans to the 1978 national championship and into 8 bowl games. He won 74.1% of his games while compiling a 104-35-4 record. Robinson produced 24 All-American first teamers, 22 NFL first rounders, 2 Heisman Trophy winners (Charles White and Marcus Allen). He twice was Pac-10 Coach of the Year (1976 and 1978) and National Coach of the Year in 1979.

Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen made a statement:

“Words are inadequate for a person that has impacted your life in such a way; you can’t even describe it. The impact John had on his players, particularly myself, is so deep and profound. Knowing him was life-changing. He was a great man and a great coach. I love him so much. He was one of the greatest teachers, motivators and psychologists of all-time. Everything we were on the field was a reflection of him. John Robinson is one of the greatest Trojans ever. I always wanted to go to USC, and my time there was better than I could’ve ever imagined – and he made it special. It’s a sad day, but it’s also a day of celebration of a great man.”

Legendary USC And Rams Coach John Robinson Passed Away At 89

The Los Angeles Rams honored Robinson with a moment of silence prior to Monday night’s game against the Dolphins. Robinson had been the winningest coach in franchise history and served as head coach of the Rams from 1983-91. Current head coach Sean McVay recently supplanted him with the team’s 30-20 Week 8 win over the Vikings at SoFi Stadium. The organization released a statement on Robinson:

“We are heartbroken to share that former Los Angeles Rams head coach John Robinson passed away earlier today. Coach Robinson holds the record for most regular season wins in Rams franchise history,” the Rams said in a statement. “He also won four Rose Bowls and a national championship as the head coach of USC and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009. Our thoughts are with Coach Robinson’s family and friends, and all who he impacted throughout his storied career.”

Rest in peace, coach.
