Legendary Sports Journalist Peter King Is Retiring

I used to read Peter King’s columns in Sports Illustrated when my dad had a subscription. But now legendary sports journalist Peter King is retiring from a decades long career. Among other things he was famous for his Football Morning in America column (FMIA) formerly known as Monday Morning Quarterback. It was in this column, that he has had for 27 years, that he announced his retirement this morning. However, he did put an asterisk next to retiring because he’s not sure what he’s going to do next.

Starting at age 27 he’s been in the stadium for every Super Bowl and now he’s 66. That’s quite the accomplishment. Having been in the business for so long it’s not surprising that he often broke major sports stories. He cultivated relationships with players, coaches, front office staff, and anyone else who might have a story to tell. And that’s what King did, he was a masterful storyteller. Before the days of social media he would have a scoop before anyone else. And if he published a story you could count on it being true and accurate. He set the standard in journalistic integrity and paved the way for many who came after him.

Regarding King, Ed Werder of ESPN posted this on his X account:

“The two greatest influences in my journalism career – ⁦@mortreport and ⁦@peter_king ⁩ – have both now retired. I could not be more grateful to have worked with both and to have friendships with two selfless men of integrity, exceptional reporters and storytellers.”

Adam Schefter also had warm words of praise on his X account:

“Congratulations to the Hall-of-Fame reporter and storyteller @peter_king, who announced he is “retiring*”. Nobody went where he did, interviewed who he did, and loved what he did more than Peter. He is a legend. Monday mornings, and this business, won’t be the same without him.”

We couldn’t agree more with those sentiments. In his column, King mentioned some of the people he’s interviewed and stories that stood out to him during his career. He also detailed four reasons why he decided it was time for him to retire. If you have time it’s an engaging read. And it sheds light on what it’s like to be a sports journalist if anyone is aspiring to get into the business.

I hope he will enjoy his retirement as much as I have enjoyed his columns.
