Las Vegas Raiders Quarterback Out For The Rest Of The Season

It’s been a lot of turmoil surrounding the quarterback position this season. And things have not improved for the team. Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce announced that their quarterback is out for the rest of the season. He confirmed today that Gardner Minshew II is finished for the season after suffering a broken collarbone against the Denver Broncos in Week 12. He also confirmed that Aidan O’Connell, who suffered a thumb injury in Week 7, could return off injured reserve this week.

“We’ll see if Aidan is good to go,” Pierce said of O’Connell. “He’s been ramping up.”

“Seeing him able to grip the ball comfortable, hopefully no pain there, and just being able to be efficient,” Pierce said of what he hopes to see from the second-year quarterback this week. “To put a player out there that’s hurting or injured still, that’s not to the benefit of the player or our team.”

“Obviously at the quarterback position, you’ve got to be smart,” Pierce added. “I think with Aidan, his future’s much brighter looking ahead. … I’ll have to really rely on our doctors and medical staff.”

To lighten the players’ load and keep them fresh, the team will conduct a couple of walkthrough practices. Getting O’Connell back on the field will be their primary focus. However, they will be on a short week as they prepare to face another division rival. On Black Friday their game against the Kansas City Chiefs will be streamed on Amazon Prime Nov. 29 at 12:00 PM PST.

If O’Connell isn’t ready to go then the job will fall to Desmond Ridder. However, Pierce said that following the loss to the Broncos, he had not seen enough from quarterback Desmond Ridder and that he hadn’t gotten enough reps. So he may not be a legitimate option to start Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ridder was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. He was initially the backup quarterback to Marcus Mariota. After signing Kirk Cousins, the Falcons traded Ridder to the Arizona Cardinals where he ended up on their practice squad.

After the Raiders placed Aidan O’Connell on injured reserve, they signed Ridder off the Cardinals’ practice squad on 11/21/2024. Since joining the Raiders, Ridder has appeared in three games in which he’s thrown for 138 yards and a touchdown.
