Las Vegas Raiders Move On From Josh McDaniels

After another lackluster performance on Monday night something had to be done. So the Las Vegas Raiders decided to move on from Head Coach Josh McDaniels. However, they also took the further step to let go of General Manager David Ziegler. The team made the announcement last night on their website.

A statement from the owner, Mark Davis, was posted, “After much thought about what the Raiders need to move forward, I have decided to part ways with Josh and Dave. I want to thank them both for their hard work and wish them and their families nothing but the best.”

Meanwhile, second year linebackers coach Antonio Pierce has been named Interim Head Coach. Champ Kelly has been named the Interim General Manager. Kelly is in his second season as Assistant General Manager. The Raiders will conduct a comprehensive search for both positions after the season is completed.

This was followed by Pierce announcing that Aidan O’Connell will be the starting quarterback moving forward. O’Connell was drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. According to Pierce, “We just feel like he gives us the best chance.” Champ Kelly added, “The guys are rallying behind him. They’re excited to see him get his opportunity.”

So where does that leave Garoppolo? After all he was signed by the Raiders in free agency this year. We still have a half season to go so we’ll have to see what O’Connell can do. I wonder if that will be enough time for Pierce and Kelly to show that they should be retained in their new positions. As for McDaniels, he was fired by the Broncos and now the Raiders. Is his head coaching career over? However, he’s only 47 so he’ll probably get another chance down the road.

Making this move in the middle of the season was a bold move. But obviously one that the Raiders felt was necessary. If this change doesn’t spark any improvements then they will likely be criticized for making the change. Yet, sometimes an organization has to shake things up. Clearly the new coach and GM have no problem making changes.

At any rate former New York Giants player, Antonio Pierce will meet them on Sunday. Can he get a win against his old team? That would be a good start to his tenure as interim head coach. I can hardly wait for Sunday!
