Las Vegas Raiders Fired Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly After Week 12 Loss To Browns
Well there’s more turmoil in the desert after another disappointing loss for the franchise. Multiple outlets reported that a move had been made that resulted in the loss of a coaching job. The announcement came after the team allowed another floundering organization to beat them. Therefore the Las Vegas Raiders fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after their Week 12 loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were led by rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders in his first NFL start.
But when Sanders took the field yesterday he was much better prepared, having practiced with the first-team offense. However, the Raiders barely mustered 10 points in the 24-10 loss to the Browns. So 11 games into the season head coach Pete Carroll made a statement:
“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” first-year coach Pete Carroll said in a statement released by the team. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”
As reported by Sr. NFL Reporter Albert Breer: “Vegas lured Chip Kelly from Ohio State with a deal at $6 million per year, making him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator. Eleven games later, he is gone.”
You might think that Kelly would have laid the blame for their offensive woes on quarterback Geno Smith. Smith hasn’t had a great year starting for the Raiders, nor does it seem Ashton Jeanty has been used properly. However, despite his firing Kelly had good things to say about his guys.

“I am grateful for the opportunity with the Raiders; bottom line in this league you have to win,” Kelly told NFL reporter Jay Glazer. “I really loved those players. I’m a huge, huge Geno Smith fan. That was one of the best parts of this experience for me, working with Geno and those guys every day.
“But hey, we got to win. I get it.”
Overall the Raiders are last in the NFL in points per game (15.0), 30th in total yards per game (268.9), 31st in rushing per game (79.5 yards), 30th in offensive EPA (minus-77.8) and 28th in red zone efficiency (48.1%). They’ve had four games in which they scored fewer than 10 points, the most games in the NFL.
The hope was that Kelly, who led Ohio State to a national title last season as an OC, could boost the Raiders’ offense to something better. But that didn’t work out. Kelly is the third OC (Luke Getsy, 2024; Mick Lombardi, 2023) to be fired during the season. No interim offensive coordinator has been announced yet.
Is Pete Carroll On The Hot Seat After Firing Chip Kelly?
One has to wonder if head coach Pete Carroll is trying to save his job by getting rid of Kelly. After all the buck stops with him and so far he hasn’t gotten the Raiders on track. But the Raiders have also had to deal with a number of injuries. Including two players being put on IR, starting left tackle Kolton Miller and right guard Jackson Powers-Johnson. Then there was tight end superstar Brock Bowers missing three games with a knee injury.
However, those are just excuses not solutions to what ails the Raiders. Will Carroll be given more time to figure things out for the 2-9 Raiders? And more importantly should he be given more time? We’ll have to wait and see what the answers will be.
