Las Vegas Aces Waive Rookie Dyaisha Fair
The season is less than 8 games in and already big cuts are occurring. One that comes as quite a shock for Las Vegas basketball fans, is the sudden decision for the Aces to waive rookie Dyaisha Fair; parting ways with the guard that only played in one WNBA game. A game that transpired less than 24 hours before, the previous evening; prior to the official release announcement was made.
Speaking of the announcement. The Aces provided a brief roster update on Sunday afternoon. Specifically, about Fair. They mention,
“Roster Update: Las Vegas Aces General Manager Natalie Williams announced today that the team has waived guard Dyaisha Fair.”
News about Fair being cut from the roster spread like wildfire online. With some fans feeling as though Fair was not treated fairly. Especially, since the rookie did not receive much playing time.
Nevertheless, Las Vegas Aces beat reporter, Callie Lawson-Freeman provides a possible reason behind the waiving. And it deals with the fact that Fair could not seem to contribute on the side of the ball that the Aces are currently weak at so far this season. Callie reveals,
“Head coach Becky Hammon often praised [Dyaisha Fair’s] ability to score but there were defensive concerns, which is an area where the team is looking to improve.
‘She just has a whole lot to learn and she’s playing the hardest position on the floor,’ Hammon said.
The Aces likely determined they couldn’t risk giving Fair extended minutes given their struggles on defense. They’re allowing 85 points per game, third-most in the WNBA. They ranked second in points allowed per game last season.”

However, another rookie pickup by the Aces seems to be thriving just fine. MONEY Kate Martin has not only been seamlessly fitting into the team’s locker room culture; but translating well at the professional level. According to CBS Sports reporter Isabel Gonzalez; Martin’s quick transition is due to a veteran on the team taking an interest in her and building her up. Gonzalez says,
“Aces rookie Kate Martin (12 pts & 7 reb against the Fever) is looking more comfortable out there. She gives credit to A’ja Wilson:
‘A’ja has instilled a lot of confidence in me… she is going to tell me to believe in myself and look to score. That’s what I’m out there for.’”
We love that leadership from A’ja and it’s nice to see Martin still killing it in the WNBA. However, what about Dyaisha Fair? Well, other teams could still look to develop her. Fair is very skilled. The former Syracuse guard scored 3,403 points during her collegiate career. Additionally, she ranks third on the all-time scoring list behind Iowa and Indiana Fever superstar, Caitlin Clark (3,951).
Therefore, with a little development help; despite being on the small side; she could still transform into a DAWG. But only time shall see. Plenty of rookies and good WNBA players get cut all the time. Since there’s just not enough open slots. However, with the league expanding with Toronto and the Golden State Valkyries; a little more opportunity for players will be available in the near future.
