Lakers Star Luka Doncic Signs Three-Year $165 Million Maximum Contract Extension
After a massive, jaw dropping trade that stunned the league. Los Angeles has wasted no time in making their new marquee star feel at home and highly valued. And they have now put their money behind their words, locking in their point guard for multiple seasons. On Saturday, it was announced that Lakers star Luka Doncic has signed a three-year $165 million maximum contract extension.
The purple and gold, along with Doncic share a common goal… win a championship. Luka has not been shy about his strong desire to win a title and especially with the Lakers. He repeated this mission heralding, “It’s an honor playing for this organization. Many, many great players played here. Obviously, I want to add one more up there, so that’s what we’re working for.”
NBA insider Shams Charania confirms the contract news regarding Luka stating,
“BREAKING: Los Angeles Lakers All-NBA star Luka Doncic has signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the franchise, with a player option in 2028, agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball told ESPN.
This now keeps Doncic out of free agency next summer and committed to the Lakers — and makes him eligible for a projected five years and $417 million in 2028.”
Sportrac’s Keith Smith briefly spoke on how Luka’s reasonable contract helps the Lakers. Smith explains, “For 2026 free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers have incredible flexibility cap-wise. If the Lakers clear the books of all non-guaranteed money, except for Austin Reaves’ cap hold, I project them to have $54M in cap space. Range for LA is between staying over the cap and up to $84M in cap space.”

Nonetheless, Luka Doncic also excitedly made a statement about his extension. And he mentioned how he plans to help the next generation of basketball talent. Luka took to social media to say,
“I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.
Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.”
What a nice gesture on the part of Luka. Great player on and off the court. Looking forward to seeing him doing more with the Lakers this season.
