He was in hot demand being wanted by the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. The perennial MVP candidate was highly regarded in all circles and Philadelphia knew that. Therefore Kyle Schwarber is finalizing with the Phillies a 5-year $150 million contract. Not bad for a guy getting his second big contract in his career.

The 32-year old Schwarber wanted to stay with the Phillies and they wanted him back, hence their late push to get him to return. Sources had already expressed confidence that a deal would get done and the owner John Middleton wouldn’t allow him to go anywhere else. It had been thought that the Reds had a chance to sign him since he grew up in Middletown, OH just outside of Cincinnati. Nevertheless it didn’t happen so Philly got to keep their power-batter, clubhouse leader and community stalwart.

In addition to those qualities, he also helped the Phillies get to the playoffs where they eventually lost to the World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Which means that Philly is close to getting a championship of their own. Schwarber finished second in MVP voting thanks to hitting .240/.35/.563 with 56 home runs and leading the NL with 132 RBIs. Since 2022 he has hit at least 38 home runs over four seasons. He became the 21st player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game. Plus he was just one of five players with at least 100 walks.

Describing why Schwarber is so valuable to the locker room, Phillies’ manager Rob Thomson said:

“Just the work ethic. The body has gotten better over time, “said Thomson about Schwarber’s durability. “He’s in the best shape of life right now. I don’t think that’s going to change.”

“We’ve always wanted him back. He’s so different than most of the guys I’ve ever been around,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. “He’s a great player and he knows how to bring the heartbeat of a clubhouse down when things are going rough. He’s just a huge part of our ball club.”
