Knicks First in NBA Playoff History to Win Back-to-Back Playoff Games After Trailing 20pts

There’s clutch players. But this is a clutch team. The New York Knicks have become the first team in NBA playoff history to win back-to-back playoff games after trailing by 20pts. This is also the first time in Knicks franchise history that that have won the first five road games they’ve played in a postseason.

Yes, what New York is doing right now is something that has not been seen in almost three decades. Literally, 27 years in the making. The Knicks are the first team to overcome a 20-point deficit to win multiple games within a single series since at least 1998.

In Game 1 in the third quarter the Knicks were down 52-72. They would come back to win it 108-105. Now in Game 2 they were again down 20 in the third quarter, 53-73. And on Wednesday they would once again rally to victory, 91-90.

As one can see, New York is giving new meaning to playing all 48 minutes. Especially, in the final quarter. As StatMuse confirms, “[The] Knicks have scored 226 points in 4th quarters this postseason. This is the most by any team.”

Offensively, several guys are coming through for New York. In Game 2 KAT put up 21 points with 17 rebounds and 1 block. Josh Hart had 23 PTS, 6 REB, 3 AST and 2 BLK.

Furthermore, Brunson has been MONEY. Jalen had 29 points with 5 assists in Game 1; and 17 points with 7 assists in Game 2. Additionally, Jalen Brunson is the 1st NBA player since Michael Jordan to record the following numbers in the first 7 games of a playoff run:

• 200+ PTS
• 50+ AST
• 43%+ FG
• 20 or less TOV

So then, the guy is effective. A real threat on the court. However, this leaves basketball fans to wonder; what is going on with Boston?

Part of the reason for the Knicks being able to comeback, is that the Celtics are relying heavily on long shots. The problem is, they can’t seem to “go the distance.” A wild stat about Boston has emerged after these two losses. And here it is: The Celtics have now missed a combined 75 three-point attempts in their two games vs. the Knicks. Yikes.

So perhaps a little more in the paint presence could be helpful. We are sure the Celtics will discuss and make adjustments. All before Game 3 on Saturday.

Nevertheless, another reason for the Knicks’ successful comebacks has been Mikal Bridges. Mikal has been a beast defensively. Coming up clutch with two game deciding plays. Karl-Anthony Towns even commented on Bridges’ game-winning Game 2 stop,

“It’s only right that for all the talk people have done about Mikal, it’s when the lights are the brightest that he gets to show his worth.”

So then, everything New York gave up to acquire Bridges has definitely been worth it. As ESPN mentions,

“A reminder that Mikal Bridges was traded to the Knicks in a package that included FIVE first-round picks going to the Nets before the 2024-25 season.

This week, he’s come up with two of the biggest defensive plays in recent postseason history for the Knicks.”

Therefore, Mikal Bridges is a fighter, but so is the rest of his resilient team. And they have battled through challenges and now have a series lead; going up 2-0. Will they make it 3-0 on Saturday? We will see. But if they go down 20 again, grab popcorn.
