The END OF AN ERA. The Golden State Warriors were dominant thanks to a very successful core group. Together they won four championships beginning in 2015, with the most recent being in 2022. However, Golden State will be missing part of that formula once the 2024-2025 season commences. Klay Thompson is signing a 3-Year $50 Million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
Now of course, Thompson and the Warriors have had their struggles as of late. But there is no denying their previous elite, historic accomplishments. For instance, the trio of Curry, Thompson and Draymond Green accounted for 518 wins in the regular season and playoffs, sixth most by a trio all time. Moreover, their 98 playoff wins together ranks third in NBA history and their four titles is tied with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker for the most by an All-NBA trio over the last 50 seasons. And that was still possible despite dealing with injuries.
Thompson recovered from missing two entire seasons with a torn ACL and then a torn Achilles tendon; but was still able to again become a productive player each of the past three seasons. However, when things are going well for Thompson on the court it is hard not to note his presence and dominance. He is a player that when he turns it ON, he is electric and an elite shooter.
Therefore, it is not hard to see why Dallas would have an interest in Thompson. The Mavericks went deep into the 2023-2024 playoffs, finding themselves in the Finals facing off against the Boston Celtics. However, Dallas could not get the job done and were massively out scored by their opponent. So adding a scorer like Klay is “attractive.” And no doubt Thompson would have interest in a fifth championship as well.

Nevertheless, what are the known details regarding this deal so far? Well sources close to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reveal,
“Thompson’s move to Dallas comes as part of a multiteam sign-and-trade that will also send Mavericks guard Josh Green to Charlotte, sources said. The Mavericks and Warriors are still working through details of the deal, which will also include the Hornets sending Dallas two second-round picks for Green. One of those pick could end up in Golden State, source said.
Thompson had four-year offers for more money, but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs as well as the difference in state taxes.”
