Kirk Cousins Not Ready to Quit Yet Signed New Deal with the Las Vegas Raiders

He’s been on several different teams and has left his mark everywhere he’s been. However, after 14 seasons in the league, he’s not ready to call it quits yet. His last stop was with the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent two years as both a starter and a backup quarterback. But he is moving on to a new landing spot. Kirk Cousins was not ready to quit yet and has signed a new deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Therefore, one of the most prominent names in free agency is off the market.

According to Cousins’ agent Mike McCartney, he will earn $20 million fully guaranteed for playing the 2026 season. NFL Network Insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported that Cousins will be paid $1.3 million by Las Vegas and the remainder by the Atlanta Falcons, with another $10 million fully guaranteed due on the third day of the new league year in March 2027. Pelissero also went on to say that the Raiders have a two-year, $80 million option for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, which they likely will not pick up.

The Raiders are also likely to select 2025 Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza with the 1st pick of the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite Mendoza’s huge upside he will still be a rookie NFL quarterback. And that’s where Kirk Cousins comes into play with his wealth of NFL playing knowledge. In fact, new Raiders’ head coach Klint Kubiak said that he would prefer to have a veteran quarterback to start the season. Kubiak and Cousins worked together for three years at the Minnesota Vikings. Kubiak had previously said at the NFL Annual League Meeting, “Ideally, you don’t want him to start from Day 1,” Kubiak said Tuesday.

Since this will be another opportunity for Cousins to play the game and show his skills that has to make him happy. However, he’s been down this road before in Atlanta. The Falcons signed him to a big deal and then took Michael Penix in the 2024 NFL Draft. Eventually he lost the starting quarterback job to Penix, throwing multiple interceptions and not winning enough games. But in 2025 Cousins took to the field after Penix was injured and put up a respectable 5-3 record.

Now Cousins is moving to a new location and will impart his knowledge to Mendoza who is expected to be the Raiders’ quarterback of the future. But for now Cousins will extend his career at a good salary in a warm climate. That’s what we call a wily veteran!
