Kim Mulkey Says LSU Has No Pressure With Angel Reese Now in the WNBA

Mulkey says the Tigers basketball team is still good to “Geaux.” The school lost one of its biggest stars this year as Angel Reese was drafted to the Chicago Sky. However, Louisana State University head coach Kim Mulkey says LSU has no pressure with Angel Reese now in the WNBA.

Nevertheless, it is easy to see why this thought would linger within sports minds; and why it is a question that many in the media would ask. Reese was a huge part of the success experienced by the women’s basketball program at the university. Winning LSU its first national championship in 2023 and getting to the elite eight in 2024.

And it is not that easy or simple to replace someone who not only had a big impact on the court. But was also an individual that was a team leader. A strong voice of the team.

Furthermore, as we all know, a winning formula can be a tricky equation to work out in sports. It takes the perfect combination of talent, work ethic, determination, and passion. Sometimes removing a piece from the puzzle can leave a glaring hole in the overall big picture. Yet, Mulkey maintains that the Tigers women’s basketball team will be just fine.

Kim Mulkey Says LSU Has No Pressure With Angel Reese Now in the WNBA

In a presser on Monday, Kim discussed the situation of Angel’s departure and how the team plans to move forward in the upcoming season. And if there’s any pressure felt to remain elite after losing a player like Reese. Kim mentions that she feels that someone on the roster will gain confidence and step into the “big Dawg” shoes. Mulkey states,

“I don’t think there was ever any pressure, even when Angel was here. Each kid has got a different personality. And I told you many times I coach some big personalities. Somebody in this bunch will have the big personality now; it might not be in comparison to Angel. But the personalities just kind of rise to the top.

When they get comfortable, it comes with confidence; and it comes. But we’re going to always play with emotion. We’re going to always play excited. And those personalities will surface.”

So then, business as usual. But, Angel was a force so some difference would have to be felt, but we shall see. As practice gets underway for the Tigers, on the court you notice that there’s still a nice amount of talent to work with. As LSU reporter Cory Diaz points out,

“LSU still has junior Flau’jae Johnson, who has a large following on the court as well as off with her soaring hip hop career. One of her songs, “Came Out A Beast,” was featured during the NFL’s broadcast of the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles game Sunday.

Homegrown Mikaylah Williams, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, is back after averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. She has a year under her belt and will be counted on more in big spots during the 2024-25 season. [Additionally], Aneesah Morrow pieced together an impressive first season in Baton Rouge. As an honorable mention All-American, she posted 16.4 points and 10 boards.”

But, LSU knew this day would come. The day Angel would move on to the W. So then, they are going to do what every team does that loses a superstar. Work hard, develop talent and try to keep the winning culture going.
