Kevin Durant Says He’s Eyeing 2028 Summer Olympics

Kevin Durant Says He’s Eyeing 2028 Summer Olympics—Plus POV on American and International Basketball

He has won two NBA championships. And he has garnered not one, not two, or three; but FOUR gold medals. So then, maybe he is a guy who knows a thing or two about not only winning; but the global scene. In a recent interview, the Houston Rockets Kevin Durant says he’s eyeing participating in the 2028 Summer Olympics and discussed his POV on the talk surrounding American basketball.

Vincent Goodwill of ESPN says that KD confirmed that he strongly desires to play in the 2028 Summer Games. The next Olympics will be held in Los Angeles. However, KD adds that he doesn’t like the current narrative surrounding American basketball players when compared to international superstars.

But just focusing on that first part for a moment. KD being on the U.S. roster would be nice. This means that in two years Team USA will have some valuable veteran experience and presence as they aim to add onto their impressive record.

The United States men’s basketball team has medaled in 20 Olympics, winning 17 gold medals, one sliver and two bronze since the first Games were held in 1936. Thus, making it the most successful men’s team in international competition, winning medals in all twenty Olympic tournaments it has entered. In fact, the United States have won five gold medals in a row. And now they would like to make it six and 18 gold medals overall.

And Durant wants to be all up in the mix to help make it happen. There had been some talk that the 2024 Paris Olympics was the final ride for Kevin, LeBron and Steph. However, KD made it clear that that was just media speculation. Durant revealed,

“You guys, the media, have projected that. That narrative, where did the last dance thing come from? I didn’t say I wasn’t playing. LeBron said he wasn’t. You didn’t hear that from me or Steph.

Hell yeah, I want to play. I would love to, but I’ve got to stay on top of my game. I’m not expecting, I want to produce on the floor and make Grant and whoever is making the decisions, want to put me on the team. I don’t want — not just for seniority. I want to still prove I can help the team win.

“Today, yeah I feel like I’ll put my name in that hat.”

While Curry has said he’s more like a maybe. KD could be subtly recruiting Steph, to run it back one more time at the Olympics. We wouldn’t mind seeing that if they both wanted to participate. And felt like their talents would help secure another Team USA gold.

Nevertheless, KD has no time for those who feel as though international players are superior to American players. While there has been some close calls and tight games; for the most part Team USA has been able to take the crown. Regarding the international scene, Durant mentions,

“I just don’t like the talk around the USA versus European style of how you approach the game,” Durant told ESPN. “All I hear is, ‘AAU is destroying the game; the Euros do it right while the Americans do it wrong.’

“It’s a lot of bulls— with that. I can read between the lines on that. It’s a shot at Black Americans. We’re controlling the sport. They’re tired of us controlling the sport.

“‘France is coming for you.’ Really? We smacked them boys.”

Well, the gold medal from the Paris Olympics does not lie. The United States is still a juggernaut in the realm of basketball. KD, Curry and LeBron being older at the last Summer Olympics and still destroying the international field speaks volumes. Team USA is still the team to beat. Nevertheless, now the U.S. will get the opportunity to secure another golden victory in 2028.
