Boy… oh boy! We have more contract news this week. According to sports writers, Shams Charania and Law Murray of The Athletic, Kawhi Leonard is agreeing to an extension during the season for the first time in his career. Kawhi Leonard has signed a three-year extension with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The clippers and Leonard have agreed to a three-year $152.4 million extension keeping Leonard with the team through the 2026-2027 season. Moreover, Shams Charania who is all over the deal, provides additional details. He reports,
“Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard signed a new three-year, $152.4 million contract extension, keeping him under contract through the 2026-27 season, sources tell The Athletic. Massive fully guaranteed, long-term commitment in LA.
Sources say there is no player option in Kawhi Leonard’s new deal, which is about $8.5 million under the maximum salary amount for his three years. Three years, $152.4M for the two-time NBA Finals MVP.”

This powerhouse move ensures, Kawhi Leonard will be with the team when they open their new Intuit Arena next season. It also provides incentive for Paul George to stay as well; as he is also extension eligible.
Both players have been injured a lot during their time with the Clippers. Thus causing much frustration for their fans. However, with the addition of James Harden to the team this season, along with Russell Westbrook unselfishly taking less money to stay and volunteering to play off the bench; they are looking strong and looking to make a deep playoff run, and perhaps be in contention for their first NBA championship in franchise history.

These are exciting times for Clipper fans right now; they’ve been through a lot in their history. However, it’s great to see guys buying into the Clippers’ culture and wanting to stay to help them bring them goal to fruition… to win a championship. It’s of note to recognize that Leonard is taking less money to stay with the Los Angeles. What a player.
Yes, Leonard took less than the max possibly to leave cap space to keep George and Harden. Harden’s deal expires after the season. This sets things up real well for the Clippers. This first domino could be a sign that the Clippers’ big 3 of Harden/Leonard/PG13 are looking to stay together.
Based on their #4 seed in the standings and climbing. Clippers fans have much reason for optimism. At least for now and into next season with Leonard locked up and a spanking brand new arena opening up next season.
