She absolutely crushed the competition and made it look easy. However, that is not surprising considering her long and successful career. This past weekend Katie Ledecky dominated the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the US Swimming Trials. And in so doing she locked up her spot at what will be her fourth Olympics. And is only the ninth U.S. swimmer to qualify at least four times for the Olympics. Ledecky swam in front of the biggest crowd (20,689 at ) of her career at Lucas Oil Stadium as she posted an excellent time of 3:58.35.

The second place finisher, Paige Madden, came in at 4:02.08 and rounding out the top three was Jillian Cox with a time of 4:06.89. As I said, Ledecky dominated the competition but she will now have to face Australian world record holder Ariarne Titmus and Canadian rising star Summer McIntosh. Ledecky prides herself on her consistency which has been a constant throughout her career.

“I pride myself on that consistency,” she said. “Sometimes it can be tough to feel you’re not having a breakthrough. But being really consistent is something I’m really happy with. I’ve learned to really enjoy training and take advantage of the moment.” She further added, “It’s going to be a great field,” Ledecky said. “I’ve always done a pretty solid job in the period between the trials and the games at being faster at the games. The goal is no different this time around. Hopefully, that will put me in a good position in the 400.”

Ledecky at 27 will have on her hands an epic battle at the upcoming Paris Olympic games. But the veteran is no stranger to winning with her six individual gold medals which is more than any female swimmer in Olympic history. And overall she has 10 medals that includes seven golds.

However, we also have to talk about the fact that the home of the Indianapolis Colts was transformed into a swimming venue. It’s the first time the Olympic qualifying meet has been held in a football stadium! It took a great deal of planning regarding the electrical engineering, plumbing, and drainage to make it work. But everything came together to create two warmup pools and the competition pool. The competition pool is 50 meters long and three meters deep, the standard for elite swimming.

No doubt the spectators and the fans will enjoy this one of a kind venue. And since swimming is gaining more and more popularity this may become the rule not the exception. If you are experiencing swimming fever don’t worry. The trials will continue through Sunday, June 23. They can be streamed live on Peacock, NBCOlympics.com, NBC.com and the NBC/NBC Sports apps.
