Kansas City Chiefs And Defensive End George Karlaftis Agreed To New Contract Extension
Locking up top, young talent is always a necessity for a team. We saw that last week as the New York Jets signed two of their best players to extended contracts. This week another team is taking a page from that book by signing another one of their best players. The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis have agreed to a new contract extension. Karlaftis had two years remaining on his rookie contract and Adam Schefter has more details about the new deal.
“Chiefs and 2022 first-round pick George Karlaftis reached agreement today on a four-year $93 million contract extension that includes $62 million guaranteed, per his agency the @WINSportsGroup . Karlaftis posted 24.5 sacks during his first three seasons in Kansas City – and now will continue as a focal point of the Chiefs’ defense.”
“With today’s four-year extension, defensive end George Karlaftis is now under contract to the Chiefs for six more seasons, through 2030.”
Regarding quarterback hits, The 33rd team pointed out that players with more QB hits than George Karlaftis last season were Zach Allen and Trey Hendrickson. In other words, Karlaftis is the guy quarterbacks do not want to see coming at them. To say he has been an effective edge rusher is an understatement. He has racked up 24.5 sacks, 24 tackles for loss, and 56 quarterback hits in his 49 career games during his three year tenure.
Head coach Andy Reid was pleased about the signing and said:
“He’s a heck of a player and he’s done a great job here and he’s profiting from that,” coach Andy Reid said. “Our team is also profiting from him being around. It’s a win-win. He’s a relentless player. You can trust him and he’s reliable. You know he’s going to do the right things and go 100 miles an hour doing it.”

The Chiefs had also taken care of business on the offensive side of the ball last week by signing Trey Smith to an extension. Signing the Pro Bowl guard ensures protection of their quarterback. While signing Karlaftis ensures harassment of other teams’ quarterback. So they have nicely brought balance to the force, lol.
However, Karlaftis in not just a defensive wrecking machine, he’s also a man of the community. Just last week, July 14-15, 2025, he hosted a two-day football youth football camp in Fort Leavenworth. The free camp was offered to youth ages 6-14 who are dependents of active-duty soldiers, retirees and Department of Defense employees.
Karlaftis is the first member of the Chiefs 2022 draft class to sign a second contract with the team. And it’s a good deal for the Chiefs as he will be just the 10th-highest-paid defender among pass rushers. So congratulations to the Chiefs and George Karlaftis for getting a favorable extension done before the start of the new season!
