Justin Verlander Discusses Pitching Injuries in the Modern Era of Baseball
A broken clock is even right at least twice a day. And the pitch clock utilized in baseball may not even be the reason behind so many recent pitcher injuries. In a quick presser, the Astros Justin Verlander discusses pitching injuries we’re now seeing in the modern era of baseball.
The 2024 season can barely get up and off the ground. Or pass the 15 game mark; and already multiple pitchers are on the IL and even consulting professionals about treatment. Pitchers such as the New York Yankees Gerrit Cole and the Atlanta Braves ace, Spencer Strider.
This extremely noticeable increase in injuries has Justin Verlander labeling it as a pitching “pandemic.” By definition, a situation that causes a widespread health impact. With so many pitchers feeling the “pinch” (literally) to toss as hard as they can; we’re seeing more starting pitchers have to leave the game, and their teams to go heal.
Verlander, a veteran on the mound. And a top, well-respected pitcher that has enjoyed longevity; is definitely someone to talk to on this particular subject.

Nevertheless, so what did Verlander have to say? He told the press,
“The ability to naturally (throw hard) is a large part of it…everybody’s built different, Aroldis’ mechanics and my mechanics are vastly different…it’s like the gait of a horse…you gotta find our own gait, you gotta find your own way to a baseball…if that naturally leads you to be able to naturally throw hard – great … if not, if that leads you to an end’s road, wherever that is in your career…then you go find help…but not before.
I think the game has changed a lot, it would be easiest to blame the pitch clock, in reality everything has a little bit of influence, the biggest thing is the style of pitching has changed so much, everyone is throwing as hard as they possibly can and spinning the ball as hard as they possibly can…it’s a double-edged sword…I don’t have all the answers…when the balls started to change back in 2016 and started flying out…it changed how I had to approach pitching…I want(ed) swing and miss…I don’t how we rewind the clock…the trickle-down permeates all the way to little league…I just hope that we don’t wait too long…it’s a pandemic and it’s going to take years to work itself out.”
All valid points. There’s a bunch of aspects that are causing the overall problem. Not just one thing.
Player health is always important. No team can win championships if plagued by injuries. Therefore, it is imperative that a reasonable solution be found soon to ensure teams stay healthy; and the game can play on.
