Sometimes the lights are too bright. The Bolts QB has been one of the most discussed players in the NFL. When he’s good, he’s dominant; when he’s bad, it can be a bit disastrous. On Saturday, the quarterback made football history but unfortunately in the wrong book. Los Angeles’ Justin Herbert throws the most interceptions in a postseason game by a Chargers QB since 1995.

Yikes. Herbert’s performance was literally 30 years in the making. Hasn’t been seen in the last three decades. Can you remember the last Chargers quarterback who found themselves throwing interception after interception in the playoffs?

Well, we won’t leave you in sports suspense. The guy you’re thinking of is Stan Humphries. Humphries had 4 INT versus the Colts in a 1995 wild-card game. Interestingly, the winning QB for the Colts that day? Jim Harbaugh.

However, Humphries got the final laugh and redemption. He led the Chargers to three playoff appearances and the franchise’s only NFL Super Bowl appearance. And retired with a championship under his belt; in the 1991 season Stan had found himself as a backup quarterback for the Redskins when they won Super Bowl XXVI.

But getting back to Herbert, in all honesty, not all the interceptions during his game against the Houston Texans were his fault. Justin threw 4 INTs in the AFC Wild Card contest. And only managed to lead his team to putting up 12 points on the scoreboard despite help from the Texans in the form of several turnovers.

Therefore, if Justin wishes to change his NFL career legacy, he will have to do so in the postseason. Since during the regular season, Herbert tends to play way better. As evidenced by the amount of interceptions Justin threw during the 2024-2025 season. All year long JB only had three interceptions during the regular season.

That stat means that versus the Houston Texans in the playoffs, the Bolts’ quarterback made more unfortunate history. The Chargers QB became the first quarterback since at least 1950 to throw more interceptions in a playoff game than he did throughout the entire regular season. Not a stat the QB wants on his record, but highlights that Herbert clearly has struggles.

However, next season Justin gets to wipe the slate clean. He did help to get Los Angeles to the postseason, so there is something to build upon. Next season, he will get another opportunity to change the narrative. That he’s not just a decent quarterback, but a guy that can be effective beyond the regular season. The thing is, will he?
