JuJu Watkins In The Mix For Multiple Collegiate Awards
Now is a good time to remind everyone that she’s only a sophomore. But that hasn’t held her back from playing like a woman on a mission. And apparently her mission was to grab everyone’s attention with her playmaking abilities. Which explains why JuJu Watkins is in the mix for multiple collegiate awards. And the list of awards is quite impressive. But before we get to the awards let’s talk about her stats.
This season she’s averaging 23.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. She became the first basketball player at the Division I collegiate, WNBA and NBA levels since 2000 to score 38 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks and five assists in a single game. For the 20th time in her career she posted a 30 point game to help seal a victory over rival UCLA. And of course she helped the lady Trojans get to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the second straight season.
Now about those awards, the University of Southern California provided some details. They stated:
“Today (March 25), Watkins was named the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) along with her inclusion as one of four finalists for both the Naismith Trophy and the Wade Trophy.
Watkins, who is also in the running for top defensive honors after being named a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year last week, could become USC’s third player to win the Naismith Trophy and second to claim the Wade Trophy. As far as her USBWA National Player of the Year acclaim, she joins Lisa Leslie as the only two Trojans to earn that honor.”

Unfortunately for Watkins she suffered a season-ending ACL injury on March 24 in the NCAA Second Round competition. So she will miss out on competing in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. USC later announced Watkins would need surgery and will begin rehabilitation shortly after. Her absence makes it less likely for USC to be a national contender, but I’m not counting them out. And without Watkins presence, it puts a damper on the tournament overall. But the show must go on.
On a personal level, many basketball fans enjoyed entertaining thoughts of a brewing romance between Watkins and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels. Lots of videos were circulating of the two hanging out at the NCAA tournament. We’ll have to see if that relationship develops.
In the meantime, congratulations to JuJu Watkins on all the awards and nominations. And we wish her a healthy and speedy recovery!
