John Brenkus Host And Co-Creator of ESPN’s Sports Science Has Passed Away At 53
He was the CEO of Brinx.TV and became popular with his television show that originally aired on FOX in 2007. Later the show moved to ESPN and he hosted 1,800 segments. Thanks to those segments many of us learned the how and why of things in the sports world being possible. He created a unique blend of sports and science that had not been seen before. But sadly it was announced that John Brenkus, host and co-creator of ESPN’s Sports Science has passed away at the age of 53.
His family posted the announcement on his social media page, the statement was as follows:
“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away. John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy award-winning “Sports Science,” had been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025. His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”
Depression is an illness that many people suffer from which his family recognized and therefore urged people to get help. And ESPN advised anyone suffering with depression to dial 988 which is a suicide and crisis lifeline. Calling the lifeline puts a person in touch with a professional or volunteer so that the person doesn’t have to deal with the depression alone. Despite Brenkus losing his battle, he left behind an enduring legacy.
93.5/107.5 the fan gave an excellent explanation of what the Sports Science show accomplished. They write:
John Brenkus Host And Co-Creator of ESPN’s Sports Science Has Passed Away At 53
“Using cutting-edge technology like high-speed cameras, motion sensors, and biomechanical analysis, the show deconstructed performance to reveal the hidden science behind the spectacular.
Beyond its educational value, “Sports Science” enriched the fan experience by deepening appreciation for athletes’ skillsets. By showing how a gymnast’s twist mid-air mirrored the mechanics of a fighter jet, or how a boxer’s punch packed the same force as a car crash, the show reinforced the idea that sports are more than just games.”
Sports were already cool but adding in the scientific element made them even better. We couldn’t agree more with the sentiments expressed by ESPN when they said, “Brenkus was described as “an innovator, an entertainer and an educator” who will be missed by many.”
Our condolences go out to his family and friends as they come to grips this tragic loss.
