Joe Burrow Is Confident Bengals Will Bring Tee Higgins Back

There’s been a lot of buzz around the Bengals. They got a big win on Monday Night Football, their quarterback is breaking records and making strong statements. In his postgame news conference he spoke about a subject near and dear to his heart. Based on his statement, Joe Burrow is confident the Bengals will bring Tee Higgins back. He said, “Those discussions are ongoing. I’m confident that I think we’re going to do what it takes to bring Tee back.” And he went further by saying, “I know that I’m going to do what it takes to get him back and so is he. We’ve had those talks. Those are going to be offseason discussions. But I think we’re excited about that opportunity.”

Obviously, Burrow wants to keep the band together meaning himself Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase. Last night Chase finished with 14 catches on 18 targets for 177 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner. But the reason why he could be so productive was explained by Burrow:

“You feel his presence when he is out there,” Burrow said of Higgins. “You feel how it affects the defense. You feel how it affects the defensive coordinator’s calls. Even if he’s not super productive on the night, teams have to worry about him and feel his presence. The defense is worried about him, and you feel that.”

Higgins night consisted of two catches on five targets for 23 receiving yards. But that doesn’t make him any less valuable to the team. Right now Higgins is playing under the one-year franchise tag ($21.816 million). But he definitely wants to get a long-term deal done. Higgins has failed to reach a long-term deal with the team in each of the past two offseasons.

Burrow is currently making $55 million a year so maybe he would be willing to re-do his deal. That could clear enough cap space to keep both prolific wideouts. However, the soonest the Bengals and Higgins can agree to a long-term deal is whenever the season ends. But if a deal can’t get done then Higgins will be a highly sought after free agent. Which means he can rightly expect to get a big payday.

But his comments after the game indicate he is more concerned with relationships first. “The relationships are more important,” Higgins said in a corner of the visitors locker room. “Financially, that’s going to come.” And he added: “Like y’all said, this could be my last season [with the Bengals], so I definitely appreciated it, for sure,” Higgins said. “I love those guys to death.”

So we’ll wait and see what happens.
