This offseason several teams have been in the market for more lefty hitters to help round out their lineups. Moreover, the team out in the desert, just snagged one. Seemingly, out of nowhere… free agent Joc Pederson signs a one year deal with Arizona Diamondbacks.
This offseason feels so different. Kind of slow. Yet, things seem to be happening. Nevertheless, it’s nice for baseball fans to hear of moves occurring and falling into place as we all await the official start of the 2024 season. Therefore, let’s get into the whole Joc Pederson hoopla.
Dbacks beat writer, Steve Gilbert, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale piggyback off each other in order to break the news about Joc’s signing. Gilbert states, “The Diamondbacks deal with Joc Pederson is for 1 year with a mutual option for 2025.” Then, Bob Nightengale adds, “Joc Pederson’s one-year contract with a mutual option with the Arizona Diamondbacks is guaranteed for $9.5 million.”
Furthermore, ESPN baseball writer, Alden Gonzalez, chimes in on Arizona’s latest move and why Pederson was most likely pursued by the ball club in the first place. Gonzalez mentions,
“Can confirm what Steve Gilbert said: The D-backs have agreed to one-year deal with a mutual option with Joc Pederson.
The defending NL champs have added a LH power bat to go with the additions of Eduardo Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez, plus the return of Lourdes Gurriel Jr.”
A nice little mix talent. Furthermore, Arizona beat writer, Jesse Friedman, also confirms the deal; and goes into a little more detail about the financials. Friedman reveals,
“Per Nick Piecoro, Joc Pederson will make $9.5 million with the Diamondbacks in 2024.
The deal also includes a $14 million mutual option for 2025 that includes a $3 million buyout. That means that the total guarantee of the deal is $12.5 million.”

By the looks of things, the Serpientes got a really nice deal for Joc. Nevertheless, the action around this signing really started Thursday morning. Rumblings began to get stronger regarding talks between Joc and the Diamondbacks. ESPN’s Buster Olney let the cat out of the bag. By revealing,
The Diamondbacks have been talking with free agent outfielder Joc Pederson. They’ve been looking for a DH type.
[Furthermore], about the D-Backs’ interest in Joc Pederson, who has historically done his damage vs. right-handers, it’s worth noting the makeup of the rival rotations:

Very interesting, wouldn’t you agree? Also, it becomes crystal clear as to why Joc is the guy Arizona went after. Staying at or near the front of the pack of the division is every team’s goal; every single season. Having another viable weapon to accomplish this, is always welcomed.
Yet, this is a gamble after Pederson’s down year. However, rolling the dice in this situation; might prove to be a continued winning combination for the defending National League champs.
