Jim Harbaugh Continues to be Courted by the Chargers With Second Interview
Is Michigan’s golden boy about to Bolt Up? Well, Jim Harbaugh continues to be courted by the Chargers with second interview expected to happen today. Mike Garafolo reported today on The Insiders that the Chargers and Jim Harbaugh may be nearing a deal. Garafolo reveals,
“My understanding is it’s an extremely strong offer that they (the Chargers) have made to him financially. They are now at the point where they are discussing staffing….this feels like advancing to the point where if everybody is comfortable….that this team could move on Jim Harbaugh and try to get him under contract here in the near future.”
However, could Harbaugh be flirting with the NFL to get a better offer from Michigan? Is Jim toying with LA just to get some leverage? Mike Garafolo adds this point,
“It feels like Harbaugh is not just toying with the NFL to try to get Michigan to agree to something to jump back to college. This has felt like Harbaugh has his eyes locked on the NFL and this could be the move in the near future to Los Angeles back to California, where he’s coached before, where he’s played before… where he’s comfortable.”
Reportedly thus far, the Chargers have interviewed 15 candidates for their Head Coach position (fulfilling the Rooney Rule); but Harbaugh is the only one to come back for a 2nd interview. However, it’s stated by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that this is still a fluid situation with Harbaugh; as he is still in contact with the University of Michigan.
Nevertheless, let’s just surmise that Jim chooses LA; since per Garafolo Harbaugh and the Chargers are discussing staffing. What could a potential staff under Jim look like? Aaron Wilson who covers sports for NBC’s KPRC 2 Houston station; gives some insight. Wilson states via X:
Jim Harbaugh Continues to be Courted by the Chargers With Second Interview
Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated’s Monday Morning Quarterback chimed in on the Rich Eisen show with further details on the decision making process.
“I’m not sure this is about money. I think this is about structure. This is about resources. This is about what you’re going to put around me and what it’s going to look like…Are you willing to pay Jesse Minter 3-4 Million a year to come with me (as defensive coordinator)?
What does my front office look like? They’ve interviewed no less than 4 candidates that he’s got connections to (Joe Ortiz – Ravens, Ian Cunningham – Bears, Brandon Brown – Giants, and Ed Dodds -Colts). It looks like they are willing to hire a GM to line up with him.
How does ownership involve itself in football? The Spanos family is very involved, it’s a family business, and John Spanos (Dean’s son) has overseen the football operations. Jim Harbaugh had problems with ownership in San Francisco.
So I could see with Jim…a big part would be…how do I make sure that’s not a problem now?….I think all of that stuff is what determines whether this gets pushed over the goal line or not.”
Can Harbaugh rescue the Chargers? Well he certainly would go a long way to helping the Chargers to possibly become relevant in a crowded LA market. A market of hardcore fans that strongly cares about their teams if they are in contention for championships. The type of wins which has eluded the Chargers to this point in their history.
Jim Harbaugh Second Interview with Chargers
Clearly at this point Jim Habaugh has all the leverage and can pick his next job. He’s won wherever he goes and the Chargers; unfortunately, lose whatever they do. So it’s time for yet another change.
The Chargers desperately need a name coach with a championship resume. The Chargers have to do whatever it takes to make it work for Harbaugh. Maybe with his hiring, lightening shall finally strike.
