Jets Grounded By the Chargers On Monday Night

They just kept finding ways to win. But the New York Jets were grounded by the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football. After watching the game, I can’t figure out how the Jets were able to win any games. The fact that they beat the Eagles this season is a real mystery. Granted they have a good defense. But they need much more than that to win.

On offense they struggled mightily. When Zach Wilson had time to throw, the receivers were dropping the balls. Or Wilson would force his throws to his first read instead of checking down. Therefore, he wasn’t able to complete many of his passes. Or sometimes the passes were under thrown. But that’s probably because the Jets defense had him under pressure all game long. The running game went nowhere which put more pressure on the passing game. Wilson threw for 263 yards but it didn’t matter because they couldn’t score.

Justin Herbert threw for 136 yards and the Chargers only rushed for 84 total yards. The difference was that the Jets had three fumbles, two of which led to touchdowns for the Chargers. Both quarterbacks were sacked multiple times. Herbert was sacked five times and Wilson eight times. When the Jets opened the third quarter they moved the ball down to the 11 yard line. Then Wilson was sacked twice putting them at the 28 yard line. Losing that much yardage almost took them out of field goal range. Clearly the offensive lines for both teams need to do a better job.

On a side note, the Chargers defense was ranked last in pass defense. This game surely lifted them up a couple of spots. Both teams have underperformed but are at 4-4. If they can remain at .500 or above remains to be seen, but I have my doubts. Next week the red hot 6-2 Lions will be at the Chargers. And the Jets will head to Las Vegas to face the rebuilding Raiders. Given that we are halfway through the season neither team can afford to lose. We’ll see how it all plays out.
