Jerry Jones Has Spoken With Deion Sanders About Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Vacancy
With Mike McCarthy now out, the story shifts to… who’s next? Who will be the next new head coach in the Dallas organization? There have been quite a few names mentioned and thrown into the mix, but one in particular is seemingly receiving a little more attention than all the others. This week the rumor mill is buzzing over an interesting exchange, NFL owner Jerry Jones has spoken with Deion Sanders about the Dallas Cowboys head coach vacancy.
Sanders has built a nice and respectable coaching resume for himself. He has helped to change and put the Colorado college football program on the map. This season even one of his players took home the coveted Heisman Trophy Award. Furthermore, Deion also has previous ties with the iconic franchise.
Sanders was on Dallas’ last Super Bowl championship team in 1995 and earned both Pro Bowl and All-Pro accolades in four of his five years with the Cowboys. So hiring an individual who helped your team win and played at an elite level is probably very appealing to Jones. Hence the conversation between the two.
Nevertheless, FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz broke the news regarding the Jones and Sanders communication. Schultz says,
“Sources: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has spoken with Colorado HC Deion Sanders about the team’s head coaching vacancy, and discussions are expected to continue regarding the possibility of him becoming the next head coach in Dallas. Coach Prime is considered a top candidate, though the Cowboys plan to interview other candidates as part of the process, per team sources.”

As one can probably imagine, Deion was honored to hear from Jerry Jones. Especially, since such contact obviously means that Jerry thinks highly of Sanders and believes he is the right guy for the Cowboys coaching job. But Deion is very happy where he is currently at in his career. On Monday night as news starting swirling about the Cowboys parting ways with McCarthy and now possibly the franchise having Deion in mind, Coach Prime states,
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
Well, it sounds like the pair had a good call. However, Dallas still plans to consider a few others. But for now it seems clear that Jerry Jones has some favorite candidates in mind.
