Jeff Kent Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame as Part of the 2026 Class
The class of 2026 is finally beginning to take shape. And as of right now, we now know at least one name, one individual who shall be heading to Coopertown. On Sunday, it was announced that Jeff Kent was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 class. Kent was named the National League MVP in 2000 during his time with the San Francisco Giants. The 5x All-Star, 4x Silver Slugger and MVP began his Hall of Fame career in Toronto.
Nevertheless, the league was among the first to herald the exciting news. Major League Baseball took to social media platform X, to say, “Welcome Jeff Kent to the Hall of Fame Class of 2026! He has been elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee.”
Number 21 enjoyed quite the tenure in baseball. Kent lasted 17 seasons in Major League Baseball with 6 different ball clubs, blasting more home runs (377) than any second baseman in MLB history. Therefore, it makes sense that a committee would view Jeff Kent as worthy of achieving baseball immortality.
Kent, 57, will be joined in the Hall of Fame Class of 2026 by any electees who emerge from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voting, which will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

However, there are SO many others that are just as deserving of having their legacies cemented in stone. As we all know, there are players who make it into the Hall. And players who were dominant in their day but not fortunate to achieve election due to lack of votes. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on this very development stating,
“Second baseman Jeff Kent was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Baseball Era committee. He will be inducted in July. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy and three others did not receive sufficient votes.”
So then, in a nutshell here were the results of the December 7 vote. And remember that only 12 votes from the 16-member committee is needed for election:

Jeff Kent (14 votes)
Not Elected:
Barry Bonds (fewer than 5)
Roger Clemens (fewer than 5)
Gary Sheffield (fewer than 5)

Dale Murphy (6 votes)
Don Mattingly (6 votes)

For some fans, it seems that seeing the likes of Murphy, Clemens and Bonds enter the Hall is slim to none. So then, what’s next for Clemens and company? By rule, candidates who receive fewer than five votes in this election are not eligible for consideration by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee in 2028. This means Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield and Fernando Valenzuela will not be eligible again until 2031.
The 16-member Hall of Fame Board-appointed electorate charged with the review of the Contemporary Baseball Era Ballot was comprised of Hall of Fame members Fergie Jenkins, Jim Kaat, Juan Marichal, Tony Pérez, Ozzie Smith, Alan Trammell and Robin Yount. Along with major league executives Mark Attanasio, Doug Melvin, Arte Moreno, Kim Ng, Tony Reagins and Terry Ryan. Lastly, veteran media members/historians Steve Hirdt, Tyler Kepner and Jayson Stark rounded out the committee.
