Jayden Daniels Named Commanders Starting Quarterback
He was taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders. Now Jayden Daniels has been named the Commanders starting quarterback. Earlier this year Daniels was asked if he anticipated starting Week 1. Daniels responded, “Do I anticipate (starting Week 1)? I mean, I’m confident in my abilities, but that’s a decision that they’ve got to make,” he said. “That’s above me.” Daniels added: “From what I heard, they said whenever I’m ready, I’m ready. So whenever I feel like I’m ready, I’m ready.
Well apparently the Commanders feel that Daniels is ready. On Monday, head coach Dan Quinn announced that the rookie will be the Week 1 starter. He went on to say: “I thought he had another really good outing,” coach Dan Quinn said after the Commanders’ preseason game against the Dolphins. “The accuracy, the decision-making of where to go. He really is a unique competitor.”
Throughout training camp Daniel has shown the qualities that made Washington believe he was worth the No. 2 pick. His coaches have praised his ability to not only retain information but implement it and improve each day. Even his teammates have recognized his talents and abilities.
“He naturally has a good feel of where to position the ball, whether it’s an in-breaking route, out-breaking route, a ball down the field,” said wideout Terry McLaurin. “A lot of the things, he just naturally has the ability to have a feel for the game, which is very unique for any quarterback, but let alone a rookie.”

As for Daniels, he has remained patient as he has worked to overcome various obstacles. Over the past two weeks, Daniels has exclusively worked with the starting offense. But he isn’t satisfied with being named the starter.
“I like competing; I’m a competitor,” Daniels said. “Regardless of if I was announced the starter or not, you still gotta compete. You still can’t be content [with] your job, [be] comfortable and think it’s just your job and seal the deal. You gotta compete.”
Recently Tom Brady told Stephen A. Smith: “I think it’s just a tragedy that we’re forcing these rookies to play early, but the reality is the only reason why we are is because we’ve dumbed the game down, which has allowed them to play,” Brady said during a lengthy chat with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith on Monday. Brady thinks that quarterback development in the NFL has taken a step back. Mostly due to the push to get rookies on the field as quickly as possible. We’ll see if his thoughts will apply to Jayden Daniels this season.
