Jason Kidd on Cooper Flagg Playing in Summer League—Wants Him at Point Guard
It’s been a whirlwind experience for the 2025 NBA Draft’s number one overall pick. He’s selected on Wednesday, thrust into the media, then two days later arrives in Dallas to join the Mavericks to begin his professional basketball journey. And he’s ready to contribute; he tells the press, “Something that’s talked a lot about is being a two-way guy, the culture of playing both sides of the ball, playing really hard, making the right plays all the time.” That’s an excellent mindset, but his coach has some ideas too; Jason Kidd spoke on Cooper Flagg playing in the Summer League mentioning that he wants to put him at point guard.
On Friday, Kidd had nothing but praise for the Mavericks newest addition. He’s looking forward to working with Flagg. And seeing his development and growth as a player; just as much as fans are psyched about it.
Nonetheless, Jason, Cooper and GM Nico Harrison joined forces at the Dallas Mavericks practice facility. They were there for a scheduled press conference. Where Cooper Flagg would address the media for the first time as a Dallas Maverick.

NBA correspondent Mark Stein relayed the Dallas Mavericks expectations for Flagg in the upcoming summer league. He mentions,
“The NBA just announced that the Mavericks’ second summer league game starring Cooper Flagg will be July 12 in Las Vegas against San Antonio and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper at 4 PM ET.
The early expectation is Flagg would play in Dallas’ first two summer league games: July 10 against the Lakers before San Antonio.
Mavericks coach Jason Kidd: ‘We’re talking about an 18-year-old who has all the right answers and is talking about working out after this. He’s a winner. I want to put him at the point guard, I want to make him uncomfortable. I don’t look at the position … I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens. Let’s get it started right off the bat. He’s going to be successful for a long time… The Mavs are very blessed to have him [as] a part of the family.’
Bronny James is confirmed to play for the Lakers’ summer league team in Las Vegas, sources tell The Stein Line, with Mavericks vs. Lakers set for ESPN at 8 PM EST on July 10.”
Well, the Summer League is shaping up to be intriguing. Right off the bat basketball fans will get to see Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, Bronny James and Angel Reese’s brother; JuJu Reese who went undrafted, but was snagged by the Los Angeles Lakers. So then, we look forward to seeing these players in action and many more.
