James Harden And Bobby Portis Staying With Their Respective Teams

James Harden And Bobby Portis Staying With Their Respective Teams

As the NBA free agency period rolls on, more players have decided to decline their options to remain where they are. Two of those players are James Harden and Bobby Portis who are staying with their respective teams, the Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks. Former Kia MVP winner James Harden and top reserve player Bobby Portis will both be doing new deals. Harden will sign a new deal worth $81.5 million to stay with the team for the next two seasons. And Portis plans to agree to a three-year, $44 million deal.

Harden is declining his $36.3 million player option in favor of the new deal. The new deal gives Harden a raise after the 11-time All-Star helped the Clippers reach fifth place in the Western Conference last season. While also earning All-NBA third-team honors. And according to Shams Charania:

“The second year has a player option and is partially guaranteed. This deal furthers the strong partnership Harden has forged with the Clippers since he arrived. He receives a well-deserved raise while providing the team with flexibility to add talent in the present and future.”

And the team is happy to be keeping Harden who will remain paired with their other superstar Kawhi Leonard. They commented:

“He’s our No. 1 priority,” Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said of Harden on Wednesday. “We’re super hopeful that James is here, and he’s here for a long time. … He can opt out, and hopefully we can do a deal that makes sense for both sides.”

As for Portis, he also made the move to stick around with his team, the Milwaukee Bucks. Regarding his deal, Charania posted:

“Bobby Portis intends to sign a three-year, $44 million contract to return to the Milwaukee Bucks, with a player option for 2027-28, sources tell ESPN. Bucks and Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports reach a new deal for the sixth man extraordinaire and fan favorite in Milwaukee.”

Portis has been a fan favorite since joining the Bucks for their 2020-21 championship season. He has also gotten votes for the Kia Sixth Man of the Year Award in three of the last five seasons. And he has averaged 13.6 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 49.4% from the floor and 39.7% from 3-point range. However, the past season was a tough one as he had to cope with the death of his grandmother, and his home being burglarized.

However, the new deals look to be good for both players giving them more money and options down the road. Congratulations to both Harden and Portis, we wish you further success in the future.
